Front shock boot replacement
Want to replace the worn rubber boots around the front shocks (XT600 -87). After removing the wheel, Clymer manual seems to say that I have to depressurize the shocks before loosening the screws that attach the top of the shocks to the steering column. Is this true? If indeed so, what kind of pump do I need to pressurize back again (or can I ride the bike reeeal slow to the nearby gas station & use the air there)? TIA

you are not supposed to pressurize the forks, the valve is there to release the pressure that builds up after a while

If you're just replacing the gaiters, just undo the bolts on the yoke clamp, and slide the shocks out, don't take them to bits. You'll have to undo the speedo cable and take off the brake caliper first.
