Gas tank rust
I have a one year old (to me) '88 XT600. Just discovered I have rust in my gas tank. The bike runs great. I'd like to get rid of the rust and prevent it in the future. I'd appreciate any help here.
Thanks |
There are treatments like Kreem and Por [ I think that's correct ] that you can use to seal the rust.
A non corrosive way to get rid of rust is to mix black treacle and water and leave it in the tank for a couple of weeks and then rinse well . Keep the tank full of petrol to avoid more condensation and the resulting rust . An inline filter will help keep the rust out of the carb[s] . |
I had not only rust but holes on mine which was 94. When opened we found fine very fine rust + dust in the tank. The welder opened the tank and fixed it and it was used like that.
I would treat with the chemicals before you get holes. Regards Burak |
I had the same rust problem with my tank.I recommend using one of the tank sealers mentioned in the post above.it coats the tank but follow the directions carefully and make sure you get as much of the rust out as you can before you start. After i treated my tank i let it sit for a few days and installed 2 small in line filters after. You will be fine with one but before i treated the tank i was riding the bike every day for several months.I first cleaned the carbs and found rust in them so i installed 2 inline filters because with only one filter rust was still getting by.I was just being lazy and made a cheap temporary fix...
