Headlight (Installing a switch 99 XT600E)

Has anyone installed a switch so you have the option of running with or without the light on ? which wire do you install the switch on ? from what I can make out it would be the BrL wire, top left on the diagram under "Dimmer Switch" also can be seen in the connector with the colour code. would appreciate confirmation before getting all carried away.

I have!

In my case I fitted a different headlight switch!

But you can also put one DPDT switch on the Yellow wire and the Green wire on that image you've posted.. Which will cut the power to the lights.

Vando :)

OR a normal ON-OFF switch on the brown wire....

(I'm refering to the Dimmer switch on both cases)

Thanks Vando, I'm thinking of using a rubber encased toggle like those found on watercraft, save the battery from humping so hard eh, and a bit more juice if I ever wire up my electric vest.

Jens Eskildsen 20 Jul 2011 20:13

Dunno what year, make and model your bike is, but youre probably not "saving" anything....If anyhting, you'll put more stress on youre reg/rec as it needs to "burn of" more current.

My '03 xt have around 80watts to spare with highbeam on...As in, you can put 80watts more load on the bike before it charges less (but still enough to be able to e-start the bike)

Anyhoot, to help you with youre question, xt600e's from atleast 1996 and up have a switch to turn of all lights.

My bike is a 99 originally from Austria, I've looked everywhere Jens where do I find the secret "Off" switch ?

So I'll cut into this wire, on the connector it's opposite the pink wire, listed as BrL.

bacardi23 23 Jul 2011 02:55

BrL it should be!

Just be sure to make the hack before the original dimmer switch!

Not the best pic but....

http://peecee.dk/uploads/072011/xtlights.JPG

With the switch forward rear and front lights are on + brake light (if applied)
In the middle, position light, and rear light + brake light (if applied)
Towards the back, no light (dont think brake light come on either)

Thought this swich was normal, it is here in Denmark anyway.

Nice tank Jens,is it an acerbis or clarke ?....

Jens Eskildsen 25 Jul 2011 20:48

Acerbis 23ltr, actually holds 25ltr when completely dry. Love it :innocent:

pursang 26 Jul 2011 08:53

Thanks Jens, are you meaning the sliding switch ? the only manual I have for the bike is in Austrian I'll have to translate, the sliding switch is called "Lichtschalter" I thought it was for dimming the guage lights.

Jens Eskildsen 26 Jul 2011 16:41

Yeah, the slide switch :)

Jens Eskildsen 27 Jul 2011 17:44

Heres the a pic of all the light switches:

http://peecee.dk/uploads/072011/DSC033911.JPG

The red switch is overtaking lights, it turns on high beam as long is the switch is pulled. Its made for blinking down the road when overtaking, to see whats ahead, and alarm the person youre overtaking, making him know that youre about to go pass him.

Then there the slideswitch as described earlier. The brakelights does come on even when the lights is turned off.

And then the highbeam/low beam switch.

Dont know how the bikes in other countries is equipped, but I like what I have :D

pursang 4 Aug 2011 11:49

That looks exactly like mine, the slider switch is interesting I'll have to play with it as soon as I get the bike back together.
