Homemade Budget Panniers
Hi everyone, I have a 1994 XT600e with a Hepko and Becker pannier rack installed. I have been looking into buying some aluminium panniers but have decided they are way too expensive. I have been considering cutting the tops off two jerry cans and mounting them to the bike or buying some old ammo crates etc..... Basically I'm not sure what to do other than not spend £500 (near enough value of bike) on a set of posh panniers then drop the bike and bugger them up. If anyone out there has fabricated their own panniers I would love to hear what you did and whether it worked or not.......
Cheers, Paul |
Hi Paul
Loads of people on the site have posted about making their own panniers. If you do a search you'll see some seriously impressive metalworking skills. My diy efforts are not so impressive but I made them seven or eight years ago and they've done two trans sahara trips as well as loads of general usage within Europe. They're made from 2 plastic jerrycans held in a custom made steel frame. I originally looked at using two metal jerrycans and just welding the rack mounts to them but the prototype was way too heavy for the Honda XR600 I wanted to use them on. The red jerrycans have been added recently by just welding a small platform (bent 6" nail) on the back of the frame Pic was taken last Nov in the Alps http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/IMG_0025.jpg |
