IVJ starter clutch bodge
My 89 IVJ tenere has had a failing starter clutch for years now,
it usually works enough to get her started of a morning, but low battery volts means it doesn't spin fast enough & typically it jams up making the kick start inoperative and the starter not engaged correctly. I recently got stuck with the starter clutch in 'jammed mode' and needed to get started so i removed the outer LHS casing over the starter mech and removed the intermediate gear wheel which connects the starter clutch to the starter gear. I was then able to easily start the bike on the kick starter. One thing i noticed was that insdtead of the usual clump noise when turning off the engine, there was a different clattering sound, otherwise everything seems fine. i would like to know if it is ok to leave it like this with the gear wheel removed, also if there is such a thing as a blanking plug available for the LHS casing so i can remove the heavy Estart altogether ? |

Hi. If you can find a left hand casing from the earlier non electric start bike you can just fit that with no blanking needed.:thumbup1:

Hi !
I have the same problem on my 87 mod XT and this post popped up when i was looking in to old posts. My question is, can the gears be removed and I can use the bike normally and only use the kick starter to start with out no problem until I have time to repair it ? |

Next question is, where can I buy me a new starterclutch ? Anyone have the correct part number, I have looked in to many websites to find out but can`t find anything. Is interchangeable between other models ? |
