Kickstarter boss

Hello
XT600 89 kick start US

Busted my kickstarter boss, wondering if this was a weak spot and do guys/gals keep an extra on the bike?

Now it is probably the original (25 years) but i kick it with less oomph now.

Thanks
Greg

Were you kicking without the compression release working or properly adjusted? Cable should have 1mm slack when in the released condition.

It's been kicked with no cable several times when cable broke.
I know I have stressed it hard and this kicker is off an 89 where the previous owner was quite big.

When I kick he's what I get- several easy rotations then 1 very hard one. I try not to power through this one and gradually keep pressure through the stroke. It usually starts on next attempt.
When I tighten decompress cable up it will effect this slightly (easier movement) but it still is a hard kick on this stroke.

Curious if i'm doing something wrong or if I am having a problem with the exhaust valve that works with the decompress cable.
If you remember I had previous posted "top end noise". Which seems to come from this valves lifter.
I will adjust the decompress cable tension and see where that goes.

Thanks
Greg

Normal starting procedure is to kick slowly until you hear it click. That is the valve "lifter" being reset. At that point, release the kicker to the top and kick hard. Do this for every kick. As I pointed out before, set the slack in the cable to 1mm. If too slack, you will not get full decompression, too tight and you may here ticking that will wear the lever.

They break, and a spare should be part of travelling bits.

Consider that the clamping bolt is the 1st to stress the part. Too tight clamp will lead to early failure.

I have not found a torque spec for it. Maybe someone else has.
