Miles per full tank?

Ive worked out that my 1vj is doing 70 mpg, so this means i should get 420 miles on a full tank of fuel, ive not put this into practice yet but it seems a lot of miles on a tank!.
Anyone tried full to empty and checked the mileage?

steve T 1 May 2010 22:58

Max tank range

Hi sounds like good mileage you dont say how big your tank is.My suzuki dl650 will do 300 miles on a tank full 22 llrs with a little left over.Realy pi*** off my mate with hiss varadero.

frontslide 2 May 2010 10:06

22 litre tank = 6 gallons, 70mpg multiplied by 6 = 420:mchappy:

Flyingdoctor 2 May 2010 10:23

there's 4.55 litres to a UK gallon. 22 litres = 4.84 gals X 70mpg = 339 miles.

By the way you must be riding like a girl to be getting 70 mpg!! Ha ha.

frontslide 2 May 2010 17:53

9 points for the next three years is how i ride now:ban:

Flyingdoctor 2 May 2010 18:02

Yep, that'll do it! Just enjoy the ride and get pleasure from passing all those petrol stations. It now costs me £27 to fill up the Guzzi, ouch!

backofbeyond 2 May 2010 19:44

Some big singles can get really good mileage if you just plonk along. I got 90mpg (measured over 300 miles) on my XR600 in Western Sahara cruising at 45-50mph just looking at the sand. With a 9 gall tank (Acerbis 40L) that was an 800 mile range. After that I only ever filled it half way.

My current CCM600 averages about 60mpg at normal speeds but put the panniers on and it drops to a 50mpg average.

My 3aj Tenere with 94,000kms still does 23km/l which is just over 60mpg.
I ride at 100 kph which is 4k rpm.
I blew out my tank by accident(don't ask) but I reckon it added 100kms to my range.

gixxer.rob 6 May 2010 01:29

I wish

I wish I got those kinds of MPG from my divvy.

I think I was getting about 44 mpg from my fully loaded, 2 up.
24L tank
230miles a bit into the reserve..

bacardi23 6 May 2010 03:24

lol... damn... I wish I had any of those mileages!
Guess I'll have to stop driving like I used to before....

10 euros was 9 litres.... it usually made 160km for 9liters... =|

Vando :innocent:

Jens Eskildsen 6 May 2010 21:01

Mine is opened p and rejetted, if I really try, i can get up around 20km/ltr which is 47mpg. But thats with grandpa' riding.

Often its around 16km/ltr or 37ish mpg.

I've got a 23ltr acerbis tank, and hit reserve somerewhere after 300km...

Yup, that's me :innocent:. Been hiding out here under an assumed name, - witness protection and all that :blushing:. Just goes to show that you can't be too careful with phoning home and all that sort of thing

CCM's still going strong - got me down to West Africa as planned and although I haven't used it much over the last year or so (succession of foot injuries have kept me off bikes till a month or two back) I've been getting withdrawal symptoms and have started thinking about using it for a trip to Greece /Turkey later in the summer (depending on family /work /kids bankrupting me - the usual stuff).

Motorbike Pig Freak 7 May 2010 20:43

I've got an 05 3aj and can get 400km or 250 miles out of 22 litres from a 23ltr acerbis tank. Thats about 11.36 miles per litre and I have to ride very carefully to achieve it, when the dicipline breaks the mpg plummets...:oops2:
Any tips for better economy?

Jens Eskildsen 7 May 2010 21:29

Doesn't sound way of.

Stock carb and jets?

If you're airfilter is filled up with junk, you might not get all the air you need.

perhaps a plugtest to see if you're running a tad rich.

Motorbike Pig Freak 9 May 2010 23:48

I gave the bike a bit of a service and the air filter was cleaned, it was not particularly dirty though. I am not sure about the jets, the carb is stock but the bike has a dynojet sticker on it somewhere so it might have been fiddled with at some point. The bike does backfire a bit under decelleration which could suggest that it might need a bit of a tweak and the baffle has been removed from the stock silencer too. I didn't like it so loud so made up an end pipe which made it much quieter. i would prefer the baffle in but I don't have it.... anybody got one going spare??
Everyone says change the pipe but they cost loads and the one on it is good so it can stay for now.

Jens Eskildsen 10 May 2010 17:29

Stok pipes are fine for what they are. No reason to change, theres no big powercurve to gain from it. The stock exhasut is heavy, but so is stainlees steel ones.

If you put in a homemade baffle, and are running a dynojet kit, you coooould be running a tad rich, giving you more fuel consumption.

I get very similar from my 1986 1VJ (standard except for Laserpro end can). Commuting in UK gives about 400km before reserve, and I can usually get about 21 litres in then. That's a mix of A, B and motorway with a max cruising speed of about 110km/h.. The tank is pretty dented so I'm close to the theoretical 23 litre max at this capacity. The economy suffers a bit on the piste tho...lower gears, more revs and luggage...

icehole 11 Jun 2010 19:27

My 88 xt600, stock w/ Acerbis tank gets 38 miles/gallon.

My 89 xt600 w/ Cobra exhaust gets about 42 miles/gallon, and I don't baby either of them.

Trade it in for a lean burn Enfield.. Over the last year I have averaged 96mpg with mine. Usually in the 50-65mph range cruising. ATM I have a 14 litre tank and I have yet to put more than 12 litres in it which gives me 240 mile range. I do have a new 22 litre tank for it, but it is the wrong colour so have not yet fitted it. That should give me an easy 400 mile range.
