More haste less speed!!!
I've been rushing to get my engine re-built this evening and I think I've dropped a major b*ll*k:(
I got it all together and tried kicking it over and got nothing - not even a fart!!! There's fuel, there's a spark and there's a good kick turning the engine!!! What I THINK I've done is messed up on the timing - I think it's 180 degrees out. So no risk of valve damage thankfully!!! I'll sort it out tomorrow when I get home from work (hopefully). Moral of this story - don't rush a job that you should take your time over. |

I had trouble getting to sleep last night over this and I'm still thinking the same thing - you can't get it 180degrees out, it's either right or wrong.

Did you forget to align the "dots" of the gears on the engine right side? the ones next to the oil pump? that's more than enough
Here in Portugal we call those dots misaligned as the engine being "descomandado" sorry, don't know the translation... take care of that before you bend any valves or worse! :cool4: Vando |
The dots are for the balance and crankshaft to reduce vibration - and yes they were lined up!!!
I'm still at a loss as to why it won't start - the timing is correct (as far as I can tell) and there's a good spark. All I've had was a half hearted back fire that got my neighbors attention for a moment. Is there a difference between 43F and 2KF flywheeels? that's the only thing that is different to standard on this engine. |
are you trying to start it on the kick or starter motor, and how have you checked for fuel?
My triumph just wouldnt go and it turned out to be a poor seal on the inlet manifold that was letting air in, so despite the carb appearing to work fine, and a smell of fuel in the exhaust, and a spark it still wouldn't fire up (final solution was a new carb) - so check your rubbers |
Still not going - and I'm losing patience!!!
I'm starting to question the cdi now as the spark isn't as good as it should be. I'm not sure whether I've managed to damage it while I have removed the left hand casing with the coils in it and shorting something out - is this possible??? The cdi I have isn't 'standard' either by the look of it - it's bright red for starters!!! Is there any way to test a cdi??? |

It's not the timing - that has been eliminated as a possible cause.
I'm now looking at the cdi as the culprit, as mentioned before I think I might have caused it some damage while removing the left hand casing with the battery connected and the igition on (all the wrong things to do - I know!!!) the fuse has been blown too. Even though this has happened there's still a bit of a spark. The spark is very poor infact it's pretty much non existant. I thought it might have been because the battery was dead but it's now fuly charged and the spark is no better. There was even faint sparking when the ignition was off. |
if fuse is blown just replace it... without it working properly the bike shouldn't even start... also, check the fuel hose.... on my 90'XT600E when that hose had cracks it was letting air in causing the bike not to work...

bad fuel in float bowl?
Mine is very sensitive to bad fuel in the carb float bowl, if I've left it for 1-2 weeks the fuel goes off and it'll never start - even if I'm jumping it off a car. Drain the fuel out of the float bowl, wait for it to evaporate off and give it another go.

Had a simlar problem on a SP1 i had after working on it, tried everything, new cdi,tilt sensor,etc etc, I had spark, fuel, everything, and it was one of the multi plug/socket things on the loom had pulled apart :stupid:
