My 3AJ in London...
I am planning a solo trip using the Spain / Morocco / Algeria / Tunisia / Egypt route, hoping to leave in Spring 2003. My bike is a 1990 3AJ with 34,000 miles. I bought it 6 months ago with 22,000 miles, and have had no problems. However I suspect the selector drum is now worn (jumps out of gear sometimes, especially off-road or loaded up). I have several questions:
With steady throttle round London I am getting around 220 miles per tank - (29l?). Due to my in-line fuel filters the reserve does not work. Is this normal? I think I shouldbe able to go further, after Chris Scott's writing... I will post more about my trip, but I would also very much like to meet other owners of the same bike in Southern England. We have enough people for a regional meet, to discuss our bikes, our plans, and help each other out. BTW - I also have another 3AJ, broken for spares. The engine is not available, but some other parts are (shock, swinarm, forks, tank, bodywork, switches etc), so drop me a line if you think I can help out. Cheers. I am very glad to have finally found the famous XT forum - everyone has told me about it! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ =-=-= ON THE EDGE! =-=-= |
hello
a mate and myself are due to leave on a london to cape town trip in a month's time, on '88 & '89 teneres. we would be very interested to take a look at your bike and buy some spares from you. we both live in london in the south west, would it be possible to come take a look at your bike sometime? looking forward to hearing from you. thanks carl |
No problem. Let me know the sorts of things you're after, as the parts I have are in organised chaos! Cheers.
I think it wil work to e-mail me directly, by the way. In return , you may be able to give me valuable advice re: luggage. |
BTW, there is an XT6 or Tenere (1995 I think) in Loot at the moment, breaking for spares. I think the guy wants to split it into biggish chunks though. For example, you could have ALL the bodywork, or the engine, but NOT the sidepanels plus clutch. See what I mean?
Unfortunately that's no good for me, but you might pick up a bargain. I do desperately need some sidepanels if you have any. Mine have holes for luggage drilled in them, but the luggage didn't come with the bike http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif (he wanted too much for it!) Anyway, HTH |
Do you know if a 3AJ tank will fit a 1Vj ?
I'm in London too and I've recently bought a 1986 1Vj Tenere. Alls fine but the tank is really dented up, just fancy replacing it sometime to "look more respectable" ! But I'm not sure a 3Aj tank will fit. Cheers, Simon |
Don't think the 3AJ will fit without replacing the whole front end. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif Not sure though. Is the 1VJ the one with the single headlight and the motocross-style front fender?
I think decent tanks are hard to come by - theyare easily damaged in even a small crash. Might beworth getting your current one knocked back into shape and resprayed. Let me know what the 1VJ looks like and I'll ask around for you. I know where there are at least 3 tanks, possibly one will fit? If I remember rightly, Circle Motorcycles on 020 7221 5958 broke at least one 1VJ - give them a call ASAP. |
No,
I think you're right. The 1VJ has the motorcross style front end. Single headlight etc. Anyway, thanks for the tip on Circle Motorcyles, I'll give them a ring. Cheers, Simon |
hi,
the casing over the generator on my 1VJ is cracked and leaking oil. do you know if the casing for the 3AJ would fit a 1VJ? if so would you be prepared to sell me the casing on its own. thanks |
Waverider - sorry, don't have the engine - it currently lives in a racing dune buggy, run by my friend.
Try giving Circle a ring (see above). They may have small parts like that. |
Hi,
Waverider..., My 1VJ has the same problem. Cracked case on the alternator side cuased by somebody dropping the bike. The gear shift presses in against the casing and CRACK ! Anyway, I've been looking for a replacement casing for ages... no luck at breakers or on this website BUT I have discovered that Yamaha still have them in stock.. at a cost of £105 ! In the end I've decided to get one. If you can't find one at a breaker the Yamaha Service Centre on the Kings Road, London can get from Yamaha. Hope you have more luck finding one from a breaker than me ! cheers, Simon |
Any joy on the tank?
