My new 3AJ

Hi
I just got xt600 3AJ. I bought it as a non runner but know the previous owner who had replaced lot of parts. I got the bke running by swapping netural switch with my other XT.
When the bike is started or switched off it makes a loud clunking noise which I think is the starter. Is this a problem?
The battery in the bike looks very big it is a Yuasha YB14L-A2 Will the generator have enough power to keep the battery charged?
Thanks

It doesn't matter (within reason) how big the battery is, it's a just question of supply vs demand. As long as the generator can supply more current than is being used by the electrical system of the bike, the extra can if needed, be used to charge the battery. The difference with a big battery is that it'll take longer to fully recharge than will a small battery.

The clunking could be a mis-aligned starter mechanism gear. There is gearing which disengages the starter motor once the engine is running. Mine doesnt clunk and i dont know any others that do.

Clunking

My IVJ makes this same clunking noise when switched off. I've read in previous posts that this is totally normal, lots of xt's do it and it's nothing to worry about. Still not a nice noise though! Try doing a search in the forum to dig up these old posts.

My 2002 model XT makes a bit of a clunk from the starter area when it shuts down aswell. It's done it since the day i rode it brand new off the showroom floor, so i assume it is normal.
