New owner of 1984 XT600!
Hi Guys,
just to introduce myself really. I have just bought a 1985 XT600 which is currently in hundreds of peices! Iv bought it as a project and plan to get her back on the road in the not so distant future. since buying iv been trying to track down a few parts but have gotten myself a little confused as to exactly which model it is! the frame no. begins 43F, is this the model? Id also like some advice on where to start with the engine as it has been sat still for 2-3 years. there is no kick start on it, is there any other way I can turn it over? bearing in mind at the moment its literally the only thing fitted to the frame at the moment bar the wirring loom. Hi Rob and welcome.
I also joined a couple of months ago after buying a 1985 55W model. The 43F is the model number and I think should be a 1984. The 43F & 55W are very similar and both kickstart only. Get yourself a Clymer manual and I can e-mail a parts list (US model though) if that would help. I presume your engine has the splined shaft for the kickstart to fit to? if not, it might have had a later electric start engine fitted. If you have the kickstart shaft you will need to look on ebay for a kickstart and get the decompresser working. Hope this helps as a start. Gary |

foggie's right the 43f was a kick only if you have a later e/start motor its not very hard to add a kick start but its hard to go kick only to leccy start :( |

sounds like iv got a bit of a mismatch with the engine and frame then as the engine is electric only. Theres been a rag pushed into the inlet holes to stop things getting in so im hoping that would have been good enough. Iv just bought a new air box off ebay which im hoping will fit (it was labelled as 1VJ / 3AJ) Iv also just noticed that the exhaust hasnt been disconected correctly! instead of loosening the clamp which joins the 2 pieces together, someone has very neatly sawn it in 2 about 2 inche after the clamp! at first I thought it might have been because the clamp was just too stiff so they just cut it instead, but i tried loosening the clamp and it slid straight off! so anyone got any ideas for a new silencer? I may end up getting the welder out altough my welding skills arent anything to shout about! iv got a tendancy to blow holes! |
sounds like the motor is from a breaker they saw everything not got apposed thumbs to hold tools correctly:lol2:
you are gonna have your work cut out you will need the later loom and handle bar switch gear to use the electric only motor |

It is a 3AJ motor.
I think the looms gonna be ok, in with all the bits theres the assembly which fits onto the bars with a start button. this is where i bought it from: Yamaha XT600,Field Bike/Project/Restoration/Off road. on eBay, also Yamaha, Motorcycle Parts, Motorcycle Parts Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 04-May-09 11:29:44 BST) at the end of the description it says "quite an easy job for someone to finish" ...... maybe not! you may well be right lamin! a collection of different parts. Ill find a way though! |

That doesn't look like an '84!
It looks like you have a 3TB there, which would make it a post-1990 XT. How do you know it's an 84?
If it is a 3TB (roughly 90-95) it didn't originally come with a kickstart. |
You need to get a service manual, it will be very helpful in the future! An easy way to turn the engine over would be to install a chain, put it in gear and try to roll it by pushing it. Put some oil in the cylinder via the spark plug hole first. If it doesn't roll then.... that's not good...What i'd do for the engine if it does turn over:
Clean the outside first. Then I would drain the oil, inspect it, and take a look at the oil filter also. Then I would take the engine's side covers off and visually inspect the clutch, oil pump and all the gears associated. Look and see if there's any signs of crud or dirt mixed with the oil while you are there. If everything checks out, put it all back together and get to work on the rest of the bike! It looks like a fun project and let's hope the engine is good! as for the year, iv been looking at the registration doc and its says it was registered in 98 but it also says it was declared manufactured 84. and its an A reg. Iv made a start on the clean up process and have found these part numbers: Sprocket: Sunstar, 45-520, 2UJ Wiring Loom: 3TB Frame No. : YM *43F0002## Engine: 3AJ00 595cm3, 2KF CDI: 3TB-82305-00, 131800-5400, 12V TNDF09, Denso 0 Exhaust: yamaha 3TB 14711 so is this a complete mismatch of parts or do I just have the year wrong? |

It sounds like the bike may have been stolen/recovered at some point. They were a prize for the kids to steal and rag around the fields. It could have then been written off as a total loss. Perhaps either the original owner or a salvage yard customer bought the bike and rebuilt it. It was then re-registered (totally legal) and given an age related plate (manufactured in '84). BUT! It would had to have been road legal and MOT'd to get that re-reg (in '98) so I suggest this bike has a lot of history, maybe stolen again or the original engine blew and someone decided to fit a later motor because they couldn't get an original. Good luck with rebuild, sounds fun! EDIT: Actually, the bike does look a later model (forks, swingarm, wheels etc.). Again, I'm surmising, at some point someone has attemped to fit later parts to an early frame. The parts were maybe from a stolen bike? Don't worry though, you have the legal V5, just change the engine no. with DVLA and you're ok. You are honest and bought in good faith but keep the receipts and ebay advert, just in case. |

just had a good look at the pics that airbox you bought prob wont fit that frame i have one off my 97 bike that should fit let me know if you need one i changed quite a few things on mine so have quite a few bits and can prob find solutions for any thing that crops up:rolleyes2:
the only original bits on mine are the tank, seat, frame and some of the engine :blink: |

are you going full restoration or just a basic rebuild to ride
as it's stripped down already i'd get that frame powder coated. i did mine in cadbury purple :thumbup1: |
hi there the frame is not a 43f frame so it is odd you have it on a A reg . the gap in the rear right hand frame is filled in by the exhorst which acts as a structual brace so i think the electric start engine may match the frame . ive looked at the ebay picture and none of it seems to be 43f very odd ,but as seid you ve got all the papers so no worries good luck with the project .:thumbup1: zigzag

that frame looks great. mine has already been re-sprayed so it looks ok. I know it seems a bit of a weird way of dong it but im planning to rebuild it forst and get it roadworthy and then continue with the restoration as a rolling restoration. It owuld probably make more sense to to a full restoration now when its all in peices but as its my first project I dont think ill have the knowledge or the patients to be able to do it first time. it seems strange that its not a 43f frame when the number starts with 43f, could this have been stamped on just to get the v5? Im not too bothered just as long as I can get the right parts I need. Rob |
it must have been re stamped, just remember that if you need parts you will need them for a 3tb :rolleyes2:

everything seems to be pointing to it being a 3TB, plus its beige which according to this site Stammbaum XT600 3tb is a 1990.
If is has been re-stamped is it worth me getting it back on the road? will I have problems getting an MOT? |
if the v5 and frame numbers match there should be no problem getting it through an mot the number plate doesn't mean a thing, think of it has having a private plate on it.

Appologies if I am intruding on anyones thread!
Can anyone help me? I am looking for an Airbox for my XT600 2KF 1987. I have been searching ebay for weeks, last week a chap from Norfolk way sold me what was to be an airbox, turned out to be a Micron tail pipe, I think he got his wires crossed somehow. I have ridden the XT without airbox, but when it rains, the water from the rear tyre tends to shoot in the carb and kill the plug. Thanks for reading. Ian. |
I owned a 3TB
it is the only XT600 without a rev counter and it is oil in the frame. I have a 3TB tank if you need a spare, I can send a pickie of it, it is in good condition, and has been in my garage for 7-yrs.

XT600 2KF Airbox
Hi Rob, Thank you for taking the time to upload ther photo's and to respond tio my request, unfortunately, your airbox will not fit my 2KF model, it looks like a 43L airbox.
