Noisy starter motor
Hi everyone,
I have a different starter motor problem to the recent posting and wondered if anyone had any advice. When starting my XT600E about one time in 5 there is a very loud honk, like a goose! and the engine doesn't start. If I try again a few seconds later it usually starts without the noise. Initialy I assumed that it was caused by the starter clutch rollers skidding across the ares they should grip on the alternator and so changed these rollers. First time I tried to start the bike it honked ! So I guess it must be the starter motor, maybe a bush or bearing turning in it's housing. Someone suggested a bush had dried out and that I should remove it, heat it up and drop it into a bucket of oil, so that as the bush cooled it would absorbe some of the oil. Is this a good idea ? Haw easy is it to dismantle the starter motor (might it require air powered impact driver, which I don't have ? ) Thanks for any thoughts Mark |
Very easy, remove the + wire, loosen the bolts that tie it to the engine, unscrew the 2 long screws and make sure you know in which sequence the parts fall apart.

Thanks Fred
Do you knom if the spindle is supported on bushes or bearings, and wether these can be replaced? What should be used to lubricate them? The fact that the engine has never started when making this noise makes me wonder if the noise is being coused somewhere else, the starter motor solenoid perhaps Any thoughts ? Mark |
Maybe the idle gear coupling behind the flywheel?
