Oil change quantity for 3AJ Tenere?
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me how much oil I should be putting in my 3AJ Tenere after an oil & filter change? My notes tell me that my previous 3AJ took 3.0 litres and I don't remember ever having a problem with over filling it an the many times I changed the oil. I have now replaced that bike with a later 3AJ, one with silver engine & longer oil cooler and 2.8 liters appears to over fill it. I know that I have to pour some of the oil in once the engine has started, and that I need to ride for about 10 miles before checking the level. With 2.8 L in it, after 10 miles the oil is full to the bottom of the oil tank filler neck and I suspect oil is flowing through the oil tank breather hose into the air box, leaking out from the hoses to he carbs and making a right mess. Someone kindly posted a owners hand book on this site some time ago, and it stated 2.0L, but I am sure that that cannot be right. My wife's XT600E (plus aftermarket oil cooler) takes 2.8L. Any other 3AJ owners know for sure? Thanks Mark |
Hej Mark,
this is taken from the original Yamaha 3AJ workshop manual: Oil change: 1,9 liter Oil change with filter change: 2,00 liter Volume oil tank: 1,7 liter engine oil total: 2,4 liter The "oil in frame" models take more oil, sometimes up to 3 liters - just my experience. My 3AJ works fine with the recommended 2,0 liters - sometimes I take off and clean the oil tank - than it may be a little more. hope this helps Uwe |
yep. As above. 2,4 litres if you do an engine rebuild.

Thanks for your replies guys, and for not rubbing in how stupid i've been.
I will be removing the extra from the oil tank with a syringe and tubing Mark |
A very common mistake some guys (including me) have done/do quite often:
- When changing the oill, before you check the level of the freshly poured oil you should ride the bike. I don`t know how to say it in english ... Conclusion - ridden loaded (with the rider). You can let it warm for 10 minutes at idle speed or even accelerated from time to time, but it won`t give you the right answer. The oil will flow corectly all over the system only while riding. No riding = oil not reaching to the oil box under the side plastic = you got scared = you put more oil = not good. After 1km check the oil again and complete if necessary. Sorry for my English. |
