Oil Change on trip xtz660 ten ere 2008 model
Hi
My XTZ (new style) I am taking for 2 weeks in to Morocco in May and will cover say 3000 miles on tar and gravel roads there plus 2,000 in Europe. Manual says 6,000 miles between changes. Do others generally change oil more frequently on trip like this whilst away - as would rather not carry more oil than needed for top up if possible? - thoughts Thanks Calum |

Bit off topic but really enjoyed the Africa Twin stripping sequence :thumbup1:
If it snowed for a couple of months in Portugal I'd do something similar but I just keep on riding it :mchappy: |
I wouldnt bother changing oil on the trip, heck I wouldnt bother to bring extra oil either.
If you decide otherwise, and come to Denmark, I'll gladly help you to service the bike. |
Thanks for all the replies - I am happy that I don't need to change oil

I will be taking my XT660z from Scotland to Thailand this summer and it will be getting one oil and filter change in Scotland at the start of the trip, then 23000km later one in Thailand, i will be using a 10/50 fully synthetic oil. If you look the z has a total oil capacity of 2.9 L which is good and its not a real high performance engine. The main thing i would recomend is keeping the air filter clean so no dirt can enter the engine as this is the only place dirt can enter, or when checking the oil, clean round the filler first. E |
Hi
Thanks for that very reassuring to hear your view also. With regard to air filter I am buying a Unifilter (Touratech sell) which is a washable foam one with cage - should handle dust better than standard and can be cleaned easily then reused good luck - that is a major journey Calum |
Hi Revenue,
any idea what the trip to Thailand is going to cost you? Would be very grateful if you kept us up to date, am planning similar trip myself in a years time. |

To be truthfull i dont know exactly will be able to give you a good idea nearer the time, certainly not cheap with the 37 days in China being an expensive part, also the visas if you use a third party to get would cost me 750 quid for 6 visas?? In total i think i will be 90 days from leaving Scotland to arriving in Mukdahan [Thailand] if you worked on 100 USD per day just for fuel/ Food/ Accom. I bought a new bike and all the acessories, only a XT660Z another 14000USD spent so far. Eric |
cheers for the info, enjoy the trip

That's just wrong. I know fully synth oil has increased service intervals but not that long. At least one oil change on the way if you have any mechanical sympathy at all. For the sake of 3 litres. |
