Oil cooler
I've just read about another xt 600 rider installing an oil cooler to go across america. Is this nessessary? How hot would it have to be to render the air cooling on the XT inefficient?

you might want to consider making one that is 'switchable'-
I have done this on my Dakar- it can run 'standard' or I can shut off the return line to the header tank and open the feed through the oil cooler depending on temperature. On trails, loaded up and working hard and at slow speed 9in traffic) , I find my oil got very hot as in 110C. I have since replaced my old radiator but left the oil cooler system in- weighs very little- BTW if you're looking for an oil cooler, I have one in vgc from a BMW 850 FS I guess, depending on yout point of view, beklt and braces system is good to have - some might see this as too complex or unnecessary weight. Interesting. I'll keep that in mind. I'm not ready for this mod yet in the UK!:thumbup1:

All you need is a thermastat which fits in-line !

mmmmm Pickford- true-but I prefer a manual tap as it is more reliable :mchappy:
