Oil in alternator cover?
Hi all,
Hope someone could give me some ideas what might have happened. I took the large screw out of the center of the alternator cover and oil ran out! This can't be right? thanks bnai [This message has been edited by bnai (edited 13 July 2005).] |
did you remove the srew from the c entre of the case? Is the bike charging ok? oil will not hinder the working of the alternator but if the casing is filled it will cuase some extra load on the engine. I think the alternator bearings are feed oil by the gallery in the shaft so you may
have a seal gone. open it up and tell us how much oil is in the casing? Charlie |
Hi Charlie,
Yes the alternator is still charging. I slid a cable tie through the hole (yes the one that gives access to the alternator bolt to turn the engine) and used it like a 'dip stick'. Seems the oil is almost half way up the level of the caseing. Any further help much appreciated bnai (1988 3aj) |
No panic. This happens when the oil tank drains itself into the engine; unless the level in your oiltank is not low now there is no problem.
This mostly happens when you have let teh bike stand awhile (overnight) with some scre or cover off from the engine so air can escape making room for oil. This in combination with the oil pump that is never entirely tight causes this effect. If you are feeling unsure, just let the engine run for 15 minutes and check again. Auke |
Auke,
Yes the bike had been standing unused for two weeks, plenty of time for oil to drain down. Thanks for you advice. bnai |
