oil in Stator housing?

This is probably a real dumb question.

I'm replacing the stator in my 1984 XT600. On my XT500's, the stator/magneto housing is dry. No engine oil goes there. When I opened up my XT600 housing, there was a fair bit of oil in there - at least a quart. Maybe it dry-sumped over the year or so it sat, but should there be oil there at all?

Most bike stators run in the engine oil. Saves putting in a rotary seal, keeps the rust off and the electrics don't mind.

Theres supposed to be oil in there, so no worries :)

Thanks Jens! I'm slowly converting an XLR650 stator to fit. Hopefully it works. $36 is much cheaper than buying a genuine replacement.
