oil leak
 

hi everyone, any ideas how to stop an oil leak from a hairline crack about 25mm long in my lh generator casing, can they be welded or is there a excellent sealer/liquid metal that can be used its not a big oil leak but it is annoying and i would like to stop it .Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Probably replace the cover tbh in that anything else would just be a temperory repair in that spot welding it would cost about the same as a replacement casing.

You can always put the bike on its side file out a V shape groove on the crack and fill it with that liquid metal stuff that hardens up.

A new case will cost a fortune unless you find one on Ebay for a few quid..

I'd go for for Kennechi solution and file out a V then use a chemical metal repair... The Alt case isnt pressured so it should hold indefinitely.

Even better, take the case to a welder and give the guy £5 for a small blob of weld over the crack (clean it up for him first though)

I've had good results from the liquid metal stuff (repairing the prop on a power boat, so quite a high-stress application), so I think that would work well and cost very little. If possible, I would recommend making the repair from inside if you have the option. File the crack out to a V shape, fill with liquid metal, leave to harden, job done. Fill again from the outside for the appearance if that bothers you.

If you're doing it with the casing still on the bike (i.e. emergency / quick fix), just lay the bike on it's side; scratch out the crack to a "V" (a fllat-head screwdriver does a good job), rough up the area either side of the crack and then degrease with whatever you can find (meths, thinners, vodka, etc) fill the crack with JB Weld or similar and wait for it to go off.

If you actually hole a casing, the same method applies just that you will need a patch. Coins work quite well.
