Oil pump gasket required?
Hi all,
I have just received a new oil pump for my 3AJ Tenere as I am replacing the damaged old one, and there is a cardboard gasket in the box with it. The original oil pump did not have a gasket between it and the crankcase, and my parts list doesn't show one either (just 2 O rings, which I am replacing). Should I use this gasket? Thanks, Mark |
Gasket
Ha! I had the same dilemma when I replaced the oil pump on my 34L recently.
I decided that the safest option was to use the gasket, and everything seems to work very well since - oil spews out the bleed hole faster than I've ever seen before! |
Thanks for reply
Thanks XTFrog,
I will do likewise, Mark |
Hello,
I was wondering if you guys could help me out by posting the part # for the upgraded oil pump and drive wheel? My xt is ancient history here in Canada. It's a 1986 model. Aparenty the pump for my bike is available but I want to be sure it is the later high volume one. My parts guy says that he should be able to determine this by comparing the Canadian vs. European part #'s. Thanks a lot. Pawlie |
Part Nos
OK Pawlie, a quick grub around in the rubbish of my garage produced the parts invoice with the numbers:
Oil pump is 3AJ133000000 You will also need O-rings: 932101336100 Gear wheel: 3AJ133250000 Good luck |
Thank you!
xt frog,
Many thanks for digging up this information. My xt will be getting a new heart transplant this winter. cheers, Pawlie |
Is there any consencus on this 10+ year later?
I'm quite sure my 3AJ didn't have one either. If it's not mentioned on the diamgram as well, why are people putting a gasket there? From what model was it introduced? |
Yamaha recommend the use of the gasket for all XT/ TT600 and is a relatively recent update. That gasket is supplied in all retrofit 3AJ oil pump kits for the early bikes. Suspect it is to ensure the perfect sealing of the oil feed ports that the gasket surrounds. If the holes arent perfectly sealed the pump may suck an amount of air ? Definitely worthwhile using considering the small cost, even though you can get away with out it.
