oil temperature gauge for 3aj tenere
 

does anyone know where i can get an oil temperature gauge for a 3aj teenere 1989?
either the type that replaces the oil cap or the one that fits into the oil filter housing is fine.

haven't heard yet about gauges to fit both places.
easiest would be to mount a temperatur sensor which replaces the oil drain screw in crankcase.
then you can fit an electric thermometer in the cockpit.
best is to mount the sensor directly into the oil tank. but then you have to weld an adapter on the tank to fit the thread of the sensor (pic: http://www.xt600.de/xt_werkstatt/+sc...or/index.htm#)

Hi Klaus, what would you advise a cylinder head temp meter or an oil temp meter?

As you will see somthings wrong earlier and better with a CHT dont you?

I am almost buying on so please tell me what you think is better....

i would say oil temp meter gives more signifcant values. oil takes up temperature from every place in the engine. you have to consider that temperature inside the warm engine varies between 80°C (oil tank) and appr. 2500°C (inside cylinder on the event of ignition).
rain will decrease temperature dramatically.

"Plumbing in" an oil temp dial is no problema t all. We've just got the pic below on the MSN group, and you can see that there are places to attach T-section piping:

Note that this is a Mk 1 3AJ with the "short" oil cooler. It may be worth changing this for a long cooler if you plan to drive in extremely difficult places (high revs + low grnd speed) or if you are in VERY hot places.

Another good tip is to not stop and immediately turrn off the engine. Park the bike pointing into the wind and let it idle for a few mins. This stops a temperature spike occuring just after turning off. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm just about to fit and oil temp gauge and a sesnor to a 1Vj - got my parts from www.kedo.com (which sponsors Klaus' german XT600.de site). Looks like really good kit but:

KLAUS--- do you know where a KEDO sensor fits ? Does it screw straight into the drain plug under the crankcase or into the oil tank ?

Anyway, KEDO are pretty good and sent the stuff to me within three days and their whole catalogue of XT600 parts are on PDF files online.

It fits into the drain plug...

Its now built onto my 3AJ.

I couldnt find a sensor that could fit on my oiltank, which would be a nicer place.
