Pipercross air filter concerns....
I put my Pipercross air filter today but am concerned about the fit. I ordered the MPX048 which from searching on here seems to be the right one for my '03 XT600E even though it's only listed as fitting up to '99. The base of the Pipercross is much thinner than the stock air filter so it doesn't fit as snugly into the airbox.
The size as in base area over the intake is fine - it's just the thickness of the base of the filter - it's only about half as thick as the stock filter so isn't held in place so tightly and I'm worried it will become dislodged from where it sits in the air box allowing dirt in. I should have taken some photos but wondering if anyone else has come across the same problem? |
I've tried to draw a picture to explain the problem - the top one is the stock airbox and filter, the bottom one the Pipercross.
The red is the air filter - I hope this shows what I mean - it seems the Pipercross isn't held in place as well. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...dgit/piper.jpg |
Yeb, it sucks. I'll take a picture of my modification for you tomorrow.
I glued a lillte pice of balancing-lead in the bottom, to make it snug, and use a plastik-spaccer on top. Not ideal, and why im going over to twin air :( |

Thanks for the response, it's good to know it's not just me. I'd really appreciate seeing a photo of your set up. Do you know which Twin Air filter fits? I can only see oil filters listed for the XT600E. I'm off to Morocco soon so having a air filter that could let dust though is not an option. Cheers. |
I took a photo this morning

Hi, so sorry, forgot to take picture today. doh
But I've taken your're picture, and molested it in paint :D The gray sqare on the lover egde is a little piece it lead i glued in (you can use just about anything) to make the filter snug there. on top, I used a little nylong rod i had laying around, which i push in between the filter and little egde on the airbox itself. http://peecee.dk/uploads/022012/photo-1.png Hope it makes sence, its really kinda simple, but perhaps hard to explain for me =) I dont know why they didnt make the filter correct for our bikes. I've seen people say they fit fine, but havent seen anything different in other airboxes, so I think some people ride around with a non sealing filter?! :nono: Perhaps others can help with this part? Tell me if you still need the picture. |
Thanks Jens, I'm thinking of ordering a new standard air filter and then maybe chopping up the old one and using parts of it along with the Pipercross.
I might even try and do some sort of plastic welding with a soldering iron and melted cable ties to glue it all together. I'm a bit pissed off TBH, with myself for not researching more thoroughly before buying and wasting £40. |
Just read this thread. Sorry for late intervention.
My Pipercross fitted perfectly (1999) XT6E. Don't forget BASIC UK consumer law - If it's not as described or fit for pupose or of a merchandisable quality simply return it to the seller for a FULL refund. If it was damaged trying to install it then that's okay too, it was their fault sending the wrong part. Have a look at these - Sales of Goods Act 1979 Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumer Regulations 2002 Distance Selling Regulation 2000 If you experience problems getting your money back, email me at clarkneil(at)live.co.uk and I will assist you free of any kind of monetary obligation. I have a law degree and enjoy going up against the big boys.... Won a case recently with PC World (Dixons Store Group). The seller must refund your money so no need to be peeved off... Pipercross themselves may well help you out if you explain what has happened here? But don't forget your primary contract is with the retailer you purchased it from, don't let them wriggle out by telling you otherwise... The laws here in the UK are pretty robust if you know how to use them. |
Hi,
I should maybe have updated but that's good info you've given there. I did return it to the eBay seller thompsonsltd who to be fair were more than helpful. There was a no quibble refund and they gave me the Pipercross contact numbers who I spoke to about the problem. I would not hesitate to use them again. I've not heard from Pipercross since sending through some further information - I'd be surprised if they changed the filter for such a small market. |
Cool, and weird....
Do you have any ics of the filter, and especially the '99 airbox? |
Yeah, would love to see pics for a comparison.

Its an aluminium house, with a foam egde to seal against the airbox. The part that filters the air is a piece of removable filter, so you carry just an extra of that piece, which doesnt add much bulk/weight to youre luggage. Hope that makes sence. Its a bit pricy because you need the alu"box", but extra spare filters are cheap. Pic of it mounted: http://www.tenere.dk/forumnew/uploads/987/DSC03799.JPG |
