Please help me diagnose
 

Here is the deal, Engine starts right up and sounds great, The problem is when I pull in the clutch and place it in first gear the engine dies. It doesn't make any grinding noises or anything, it just kills the engine. The kickstand is up as well. I tried adjusting the clutch cable and it made no difference. Could it be the clutch? Am I over looking something really simple? Thanks.

Sidestand switch?
 

Sounds like your side stand (kickstand) switch is U/S. I don't know which way the switch is supposed to be (N/O or N/C) as mine was removed by a previous owner, but the bike seem to think the stand is always in the down position, hence it let it idle but cuts out when put in gear. Trace the wires from the stand back to the plug, disconect it and then check electrical continuity when the stand changes position. No electrical change, switch is stuffed. Open or short the plug as required (what ever the switch is doing now is the 'down' position so do the opposite) and just remember to check the stand is up before you ride away!

I just noticed on Yamahas web site that the side stand switch is on back order so I'm going to assume that there is a problem with them and cross my fingers that is the problem.

Well that was it. I took the side stand switch apart and cleaned it and now it works fine. Thanks for your help with my bug.:thumbup1:

might not be too relevant here but if your going to be doing serious muddy stuff take it off and join the wires. the mud or depth of ruts can drag the stand down and kill the engine at the most inappropriate times. leaveing you to fiddle around to get it up enough to restart your engine.

I also recommend a stiffer spring for the sidestand. Mine tends to drop down when I go over big jumps, which could turn ugly one day.

THANKS for the diagnosis gang and thank you sir for starting the post. I live in Turkey and even though I've learned Turkish my xt600 isn't around my are much. I've been adjusting my clutch cables for 3 days now and thought YEP, let's see what my friends on this forum say. My problem was...I was adjusting the cable while on her Kick-Stand and then putting it into 1st gear the same. Did this a week ago too. Anyhow, after finding/reading your post I RAN outside and came back inside SINGING. Thanks guys!!!
