registering an 83' XT600 in the UK (imported from france)
 

hi, ive finally just passed my A2 test so am obviously very eager to get my 600 on the road. i have gotten a dating letter from yamaha UK and have a V55/5 form which i am in the process of filling out.
what im wondering is how long it takes from sending off the V55/5 to getting her registered?
any info would be very much appreciated.

If you walk into your local DVLA office (most have closed), you can get it the same day if you have all the paperwork.

ah that is tempting, ive been told it could be about 5 weeks via post, i just googled DVLA offices and the only one open is in swansea :/

That sucks. There used to be one in every city or major town. And they were all REALLY busy all of the time.

bugger :/ that is a pain, i hate dealing with the DVLA their imposible to get hold of on the phone which makes the whole thing alot harder, when filling out the V55/5 alot of the info required to fill in aparently is found on the certificate of conformity, which after speaking to yamaha UK it seems this bike does not have as its older that 10 years old, i (finally) spoke to the DVLA about it and they said to leave it blank which doesnt seem right :/ does anyone have experience in registering a french bike of this age in the UK?

we took a van over and brought 3 back to restore (kept one of them obviously), and no we had no trouble bringing them back over

I did exactly this with my '84 43F which apparently came from Belgium. A long process, insuring on the frame, getting MOT etc.

I guess I was lucky that the Portsmouth office was open. Anyway I sat among the well heeled who were registering their private plates waiting my turn with my paperwork in hand. I felt out of place there I must admit.

I put on the form that the bike pre-dated Type Approval for those questions. That confused the girl on the desk and she disappeared for 5 mins for some advice. Anyway, she came back with a form for me (you get a temporary form to get a plate with while they process your proper registration document).

Off I went to get a plate, fitted it and then I was respectable :cool3:

If it helps, you can get an MOT on a foreign registered bike.

I did an MOT on a Spanish bike only last month. You need the frame number and a reg though. But I guess the reg can just be made up if you haven't got one.

If you have the French papers then it should be pretty easy.

Try and find your local office check here DVLA offices (Formerly DVLC VRO's) & other DVLA information.
It used to be get the bike MOT on the frame number try and get insurance also on the frame number might be difficult I managed to get 7 days.
Phone your local DVLA or it might be VOSA as they might want to check the bike is real and your not just trying to get a log book and numbers are legit.
If you got the original french owners papers an MOT and insurance fill in a form and you pay for your road tax and you should be registered that day.

Some DVLA offices were alot easier then others
If you have any local bike shops that import older bikes ask them who they use
I last did this about 5 years ago so may have changed a bit
If the bike model you are trying to register was also officially imported into the UK at some time it means you wont need an SVA test also if the bike is 10 years old helps.

hi thanks for all the replies, i recieved the V5 yesterday have finally got it on the road :) will post some pictures when i get a chance, it didnt take too long to get sorted out, i rang them to confirm how long it would take and they sayd 3-4 weeks and it came about 10 working days after sending it
