Screen for an XT600E?
I'd like to fit a short screen to my 03 600E.
The ideal scenario would be a complete new plastic shroud around the headlamp with a screen built on to it. However, nothing like this seems to exist. After much searching I've found a bolt on Secdem screen on the Net, but their website is all in French and makes no sense to me. I e-mailled them in the hope that an English speaking employee could help me, but I've heard nothing. So can any of you suggest any alternative English speaking suppliers? I don't want to fit one of those generic handlebar mounted screens, I need something that can attach to, or replace, the original assembly. Many thanks. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif |
I remember pictures of a fairing in a KTM adventure fashion, for yamahas, made by a dutch company.

Oops, they don´t have pics of the fairing on a XTE, don´t know if it´s compatible.

Don't think it is Pedro.
I saw the photo of the 600E with the flyscreen attached but it does look a bit of a makeshift job. http://www.evamotor.nl/Motorcycles/Y...E_Africa_1.jpg |

I already mentioned them mate, and that they haven't replied to my e-mails...presumably because it's written in English.

I've already posted twice that Secdem won't respond to my e-mails in English.

you should try secdem, I hear they're very good.
jim PS, let me know if you find one, I'd quite like one as well http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif |

that last one was a joke, old boy.
Have you considered making one? There's some impact plastic called macralon used for machine guards. I wonder if it would be sufficient for a _small_ screen? Just bend it round slightly. jim PS you must know someone who speaks french |
Your Makrolon suggestion is a good idea....I'll check that out.
Thanks for the tip! [This message has been edited by XTreme (edited 29 July 2004).] |
I made my own screen from a perspex type material - I think it was Merkalon but I may be wrong. I went looking in a boat yard, on the basis that they will be used to repairing windows on small boats, and got an off cut for £5. You can bend it with a heat gun (the sort used for stripping paint etc) but you need to put the heat in slowly so you warm the sheet right through. If you heat too fast you will soften the surface and can put smear marks on it, while the centre will still be too hard to let you bend it. When you get it right it bends like toffee - just practice on a small piece and you'll get the idea. Then fasten it to the plastic above your head lamp and support it from your handlebars. Watch when cutting as you can easily crack your masterpiece. Not as pretty as a bought item, but it works.

I found an old bolt-on screen for mopeds - the one with the two metal vertical bars that hold the screen upright. I drove all the way round South Africa until it eventually broke when I head butted it jumping over barrels - don't ask!
Looked mighty ugly but kept the wind off to the point where I could smoke a fag and tap the ash into an ashtray (beer mug tied to handlebars) while doing 50! ------------------ 1985 XT600 Tenere (55W..) |
Now that's what I call a screen, ILMuro.

Has anyone had any luck with this query since the last post? I have a home made screen, but it looks rough to be honest. I'm considering a National Cycle screen which they say will fit, but I'm not too sure it will be very good, being a general purpose job intended for road bikes.
Thanks in advance. |
Try this, the german importer for Secdem:
http://www.bd-deutschland.de/yamaha-windschutz.html 79 euros not too expensive but considering you could make them yourself.... |
Hi,
I did what boxer did and made my own, it does look quite 'bolted on' though. You can get an idea of it at: www.scotlandnepal.blogspot.com I made mine out of 4mm Lexan polycarbonate though which the lass in the plastics shop said would'nt crack. I think its the same stuff they make nalgene bottles and aeroplane cockpits out of. About £10 for a piece big enough to cut bits off to practice on. I looked at Jimmy46's bike and it looks like a Givi 601 screen. So that's what I bought - £49 from Buster's with post. It's well made and a good shape at bottom to fit round my headlamp (2003 model XT600E) I get alot of buffeting noise (esp with open face helmet) but can ride at 70 mph with my hands just loose on the bars, ie no wind loading. The buffeting would be gone if the screen were around 4" higher (checked by holding my gloved hand at top of screen when riding). I am 1.77 m tall.I had to cut down the support bars by 50mm as the screen was standing too far forward on the bike, leaving a big wind gap.
