starter motor not disengaging

hello,

ive just put my 1vj tenere back together after replacing the cylinder base gasket. since putting it back together the engine has been turned over several times by hand with the rotor bolt but when it came to actually starting the bike, after a few gentle kicks the kick lever became really stiff and when turned over by the rotor bolt (like when adjusting valves) it made a juddering and a whiring noise and was stiff also. after re-checking the timing i noticed the sound was comming from the starter area. i remooved the small cover on the left hand side (under the clutch cable mount points) and removed the 2 gears that join the starter shaft to the crank. the engine now turns freely. im presuming that the starter is permanently engaged some how, but im not sure where the mech for this is. is it in the starter itself? is the mech controled by electric or mechanical means? my clymer manual doesnt include any info on the electric start. also when adjusting the valves the engine was turned the wrong way maybe half a revolution or so. could this be the cause?

sorry just reread the replies to my earlier question about a clunk noise and found out the starter clutch is on the crank. how do you go about checking if it works and could this be the cause anyway?

any help apreciated,

karl.

oneway bearing

I had the same problem on my old 1vj engine.I removed the oneway bearing that locks on to the crank and cleaned it.
Then the starter engaged smoothly for a couple of weeks, until it locked in permanently.
When I opend it I found that some of the "s" shaped pins had jamed,I couldn´t get it to work properly after that.My guess is that the bearing wears out and the play in the pins get´s too big causing them to eighter slip or lock permanently. I read some where that you can plock them out and turn them and that might get it working again.
Sounds a bit far fetched to me,haven´t tryed it.MAybe someone else here has?

Tom.

Hi Karl,
Good luck with that! I bet Ferrari don't have these problems :rolleyes2:

My timing chain problem is as forecast on the "gasket" thread (not started by me, so it is not mine either) - the timing chain is off the driving sprocket!!!!!!! :censored:

Cheers,

Dave

ps some years ago I had a starter motor fail on a Yam 900 Diversion - fortunately it was fixed under warranty - the Yam dealer reckoned that it is "very rare" for these things to happen - not much consolation I know and he would say that wouldn't he!!
