You see I couldnt re tap that thread because the genius who stripped the thread the second time already re tapped to 16mm which doesnt leave me with much meat to tap again...

Your oil method will hopefully get you home...

You really dont have any option but to properly tap out the hole again if your plan to keep the bike for anytime.

Go the helli coil

The hellicoil is the best of the choices you have outlined. There are specific repair kit's for aluminum Alloys unfortunatly I can't remember the product names. You could of course find a larger sump plug and re tape the thread..

Hey bud,

Did you manage to come right with that plug?? You should be near the border by now? What did you do in the end?

I know hammering the bolt sounds lank dodge but it really well when youre in a fix, if youre gonna helicoil it in the end anyway, then you dont need to worry bout the hole having a new(odd size) hole diameter.

Keep me posted and please let me know when you get back so that we can hook up for a beer and some stories!!

Something in general:
Worked on a 3TB last week and checked the drain plug thread. Unfortunately it's a M14x1.5 means the more readily available and top quality Time Sert M14X1.25 spark plug thread repair inserts won't fit. You can get M14x1.5 Time Serts but cost is prohibitive as the kit with required special tools is approx. R 1700 (170 Euros).

The easiest is prevention: Use new aluminium washers every time you change oil. They cost next to nothing and are available from hydraulics engineering suppiers and the automotive trade. Aluminium has advantages over copper as they are more forgiving towards reusing them once or twice in a case of emergency.
