Surly it can't be this hard!
Hey all you XT/TT owners. I have been trying to remove my front sprocket-and can't! Up to now I throught myself mecanicaly minded, Ha! From the looks of what thread I can see the securing nut is on a conventional right hand thread so having flattened the 'securty' washer out behind the nut I throught it would then be simply be a case of undoing it. I have however found I cant undo it. With the engine in gear, and my brother standing on the rear break pedal (To hold rear wheel still and therefore the rear sprocket and hence also the front sprocket)-Im sure i could have found a shorter way of saying that :-) I am still with all my force and 2ft wrench only resulting in lifting the bike and not undoing the covering nut.
Am I: 1 .very stupid, because I have missed somthing obious. 2. Not strong enough. 3. should be glad that Dave Lambert has obiously done a good job tightening everything up, making sure nothing falls off! Cheers George |
had same problem.
- try spray it allover with WD40 - secure it good - position lever left and up, so you wouldn't lift the bike - try it with a punch, hit (what's the word?) - or use pneumatic pistol for screwing/unscrewing from some service shop. |
Seems like it needs a bit of `impact maintenance` :)
you might also want to soak the threads overnight in 'plus gas' or something similar. |

another thing u might need after u get the nut of is a 3 jaw puller to remove the sprocket as these can get siezed on |

Ive always had problems with them coming loose and knackering the threads on the 'special' nut! He might have used some super strong loctite.....
Try an impact driver, if this doesnt work hit it with a hammer a lot. If still no luck try heating it up(if bearing lock loctite is involved you'll need to get it to over 300deg C). Or go to the local mechanic with an air wrench and he'll have it off in about 2 seconds. I take no responsibility for any damage caused to your bike during this procedure. If you can move it get to a mechanic with a 'windy gun' Good luck! |

Thank you for all your replys and help! I have just been and soaked the nut in WD40 and all other lubricants to hand, and will try again this evening once it has soaked in. Hey Wonky-hows your bike going, sold it yet? Thanks again for all your replys and advice George |
I would order a new nut and tab washer from Yamaha ride the bike to the nearest tyre changer or mechanic ask him to undo nut with an air gun replace your front sprocket put on new washer and nut and ask mechanic to tighten again should take him less then 5 minutes.
I would try and find out what the exact tourqe setting should be before getting nut tightened as its possible to strip threads if done up to tight. |

Heat is your friend .. but put a new seal in .. and check the splines for ware. If you need to put a filler in there .. then let it dry before you do up the nut (and consider a new shaft next time)! And never use a hammer/ extension bar on a ratchet .. the ratchet is not a rohbust device .. use a Tee handle or a simple solid drive bar and put an extension on that (or a hammer if you must). |

Thanks again all, after adding WD40 etc to the nut let it soak in for a couple hours. It came off by hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! I was changing the sprocket over to the original size from a 17tooth! Cheers again George |
