Swingarm play
 

:confused1: Hi, just replaced the needle bearing on my 1VJ. Was trying to cutdown/eliminate the lift on the end of the arm. MOT time last year, after replacing all the pins and bushes, the examiner wasn't happy about the amount, 10mm at spindle. Needle bearing helped but still has a bit of play. I know that some is unavoidable. Only place left is the hole through the arm itself. Is this a known problem, or is it poss that one of its previous abusers has run it with the long bolt slack?

Hi, can't see that it would be observable in a MOT test even if the hole was elongated as the bolt is very tight (abt 100Nm from memory) so if it done up correctly then it should not move when lifted by hand. Have you tried taking a grease gun with you and giving it a good grease before you roll it in for the test?

It was noticed because I had a centre stand on it. It's coming off, temporarily. Will probably just wing it and see.

There are several copper bushes that look like short lengths of copper pipe that sit on the shafts that go through the linkage on the monoshock arrangement. On mine these were knackered and had to be replaced. I did one but the others needed heating with an oxy-acetelyne rig and pressed out with a 10 ton press! I had to get a garage to do that bit.

Take a look at the exploded diagram for the linkage and get yourself all the bushes, while the thing is in pieces it's worth doing the lot.

replying to the original question, I have the same problem on my 3AJ. It's the bushing that goes through the lever that in it's turn goes through the swingarm. But, it does not have play in the bearing, rather it is not fixed by the bolt going through it or by the swingarm itself, even if the bolt is torqued to the 100 Nm.
I still did not find a solution for it. Maybe compress the swingarm a little bit at that location with a press, so that when the bolt is torqued it just squeezes the bushing?

My 3AJ has the same problem. Replaced all the bits and made not one iota of difference. At the MOT the inspector ummmed and aahhed, kicked the tyres, scratched his head and then noticed that the freeplay was only in the vertical axis. Well that was alright then.

Thanks to all. Hi Aukeboss, you have probably got a good idea there. Never thought about that. Wonder if it could be shimmed. Probably a right sod to fit! Solution; bullshit MOT inspector, sorted!
