Tenere screens and turbulence
Hey guys,
Not an overly technical question but I was wondering if anyone has had experience dealing with turbulence from the screen on the 660? I recently got myself an AGV AX8 dual evo lid to add to the heroic adventure look while I'm riding around the local area but the peak suffers from really bad vibration which makes my head feel like it's being drilled. The helmet is fine - screws tight etc and if I stand up on the few pegs and get out of the dirty air everything is nice and quiet. I'm only a short-arse at 5'6'' but I don't want to chop down the screen, likewise I don't think a bigger screen would do much good. I've looked at the spoilers/screen extenders that Touratech and Puig do but they are bloody expensive and I'm not convinced they'd help. Any ideas? Cheers |
Yesterday, I drilled new mounting holes on the Yamaha touring windscreen, 4.5 cm above original ones. In this position air stream is hitting my Adam`s apple, instead of middle of my helmet vizor. I cant see any improvement. Noise is unbearable, meaning same as in normal position. My bike is xt660r.

I have an adjustable Wunderlich visor extension which has helped a lot but still not perfect. I once stopped in the middle of a ride to take the tenere visor off. I much preferred the clean stream of air. A visor really comes into play with rain and insects. They prevent flying objects hitting your neck and face. The visor has saved me many times and therefor it is the only reason I keep it on my 660z

Hmmmm, thanks for the info. I'm wondering if a smaller screen would do the trick. Don't like the idea but might be worth a try. Thanks again.

The screen on the 660 has very little to do with the buffeting/ turbulence that you get. It all comes from the air flow coming up from the front of the tank around the forks.
Last year across Russia I had a Famsa tank bag on the bike and all the turbulence went away. I could ride along with the visor up and it was OK. Take the tank bag off and it was back. There have been various designs of home made neoprene gaitors or "brush" arrangements to try to stop it. Honda even fitted something on one of their bikes that had the same problem. Good luck finding a solution. Chris |

I've tried to block off the wind tunnel coming up from the forks and it didn't seem to do much which convinced me it was the screen/dirty air. I recently got a touratech tank bag so I'll give that a go and keep fingers crossed for a miracle. Thanks for the advice.

The air comes through the gap around the top of the forks and headstock; if you look at the front of the tank it is angled up. Imagine air hitting it at speed, the angle forces it up hitting the rider around the face/helmet. Obviously it's worse with a peaked helmet.
One cure is to block the flow of air ith a home made section of plastic sheet...it helps |
