TT600R cold start problems

after about 20000km on my ttr600 i'm in mexico, ensenada. After i serviced the bike (new plug, valve clearance, re-oil airfilter, oilfilter, oil) the bike developt a bad cold start problem. even after heating up and leave it for an hour it still starts bad. never had this before. it appeared after i did maintenance. when i kick, i hear it detonates but by the feel of it it doesn't detonate strong enoug to start. fiddling with choke on/of usually works after about 10-15 kicks. i took the tank of after not starting and the plug was wet from gas, so my conclusion so far is that it flooded. Can't think of a reason though. yesterday i checked valve clearance agai looked at the sparkplug, it was black, which is not good. it does use oil and does that from the beginning and it doesn't seem to increase very rapidly. do i need to adjust idle mixture? so far i stayed away from carbtuning apart from the idle screw. thanks, sander |
Are you sure you got the valves right? Also what about the air filter?

Plug gap should be 0.8 mm, NGK DPR8EA9. Valve clearances I usually set at about 0.08 inlet and 0.15 exhaust. This is from memory so could be wrong!
If the inlet valve is too tight it will give you trouble starting, also a saturated air filter (with thick oil). One last thing, don't be tempted to adjust tickover screw! My mate did that and we spent an hour kicking it one cold desert morning until he remembered he had adjusted it the night before! |
Hi Sander, If you kept your old spark plug it would be well worth putting this "known" good plug back in, if the problem still exists then at least that's one possible problem area to tick off the list...

i put the old sparkplug back and washed/re-oiled the airfilter. It is a bit better now. We'll see how things develop.

Did you check the sparkplug gap? too wide or too closed will cause malfunction...
