Hi

I have a 2001 XT and am running Dunlop Trailmax's

My rear has done just under 3,500km (2,100miles) and it is very worn in the center, the knobs are almost completly gone, this is 100% road

Is this normal ?

I used to have a R1200GS and rear Tourances would last 5,000km that had 100bhp and the XT has about 30

Should I be concerned

I do ride it q hard but !!!!!

If you ride it hard: accelerate fast, drive fast, brake hard then it's no wonder.

Maybe You should buy another bike, R6 or somthing like that, if You really want to drive fast.

Personaly, I think that You should be a little easyer on the gas.

If you're allways on the road, look at a road tyre.

More rubber in contact with the tarmac = less tread movement = less heat build up = less wear.

Something like a Michelin Annakee still suits the bike looks wise, sticks well, handles well (no vagueness at speed), and will last longer than a knobbly or semi-knobbly. Just don't expect it to get you through a boggy field.

Hi ...im in Australia on a DR650 and ive had a couple of Dunplops on the back of that and neither of them lasted much more than 3000kms so no i dont think its you...its the shite tyres.....Im currently running Michelin T64s and have covered:mchappy: 4000kms on the rear mainly on dirt and its wearing ok....

Thanks for the excellent advice re my riding style - Nixa if you dont accelerate and brake hard maybe you should be riding a scooter :scooter:(talking of knobs)

I have done many thousands of ks on tourances and anakees on other bikes I have also owned sportsbikes but I never expected to wear out a Trailmax so fast

tnt cheers, I suspeced it was to do with the crap rubber and hot roads

Watch your pressures too, you may need to raise them if you do 100% road, as you introduce more movement in the tyre if it's too soft. You need this off road to mould to the terrain, but what this does on the road is generate heat, and it's heat that accelerates the wear process.

Uuuu guys, I'm a big boy now and I ride quite hard you know, but why my tyres wear so much?

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why?

PS: Trailmax, is not a great tyre but it sholud last 8 tkm.
Sirac is much better choice, better wet grip and lasts longer.

You're right Nixa...the SIRAC was the best tire I've had!

lasted about 7000 km (i ride on tarmac and off to).... and curving it's the best..I even touch the passengers footpegs on the tarmac...and is good for speeds around 140km/h on track!

I've never got more than 5,000km out of any tyre on my XT,I'm sure some would of only lasted 3,500km.A pure street tyre should last a long time,but any tyre with token off road performance is going to wear fast.

not as concerned as me :-)
 

I can not say for Trailmax's, but I am running a XTZ660 with TCK80s, with about 70% road 30% mud they are nearly worn out after 1200 miles

I think that I shall try some Sirac's next

As with most things in life, i seem to have the opposite problem!
I have had Avon Distanzia's on my XT, and soon after fitting, came across a 2nd hand 18" gold rim. So of course I am waiting, and waiting, and still waiting for the rear tyre to wear out before rebuilding wheel as an 18"er. Done at least 10k km so far and tread is just starting to square off with 5mm or so depth left.
By far the best value tyre have used so far.

I am most likely wayyyyyy off the mark here, but I too have a GS. On both I run TKC80's. On the XT wear is much greater. I have always assumed it is a reaction to a single cylinder engine that does not have the same continuity and smoothness of power delivery. But this is not a qualified statement in as much as I am not as rude to a £10k bike as I am to the rugged and disposable XT....(mine is wayyyyyy older than yours btw)

Agree, Trailmax is not a great tyre, but also Sirac in not
much better, maybe for road... My expirience with Siracs
is - never again! Quite OK for asphalt, reasonable good
grip on easy gravel, but very bad on all other terrains,
especialy on hard gravel and mud. The best tyre I tried
so far - Michelin T63. Better than Trailmax and Siracs in
every single condition, including asphalt road !
