Uncomfortable seat
My seat feels really uncomforable even after only 50 miles or so.
I was thinking I could take the seat off, carefully pull out the staples from one side, add more foam and re-staple. Anyone tried this? |
There are lots of options, re-padding it yourself is one way, or you could get a gel insert in it, or a custom seat, or any other commercial solution.
Then there is the old Sheep-on-the-seat solution that many swear by, or such as an Airhawk. I have an Airhawk (because I can move it from bike to bike, and I have more than one bike) and I have to say it is very very good, if a little expensive for what is basically a whoope cusion! People laugh when I say this, but your underwear and pants have alot to do with it too. With leather pants and 'normal' boxers on I last about 100 miles on the XT, change to the HG Tuareg pants and seamless coolmax boxers and the range more than doubles (same bike) before I feel any discomfort. Everyone has thier own solution to this problem, you just need to experiment and find yours. If you are going to re-pack it look for some firmer foam, and carefull not to make it lumpy! |
Get some bicycle riding shorts...the ones like Tour de France dudes wear... lol
Vando :innocent: |
Some great ideas there, thanks.
I had not thought of a gel insert but will look into it. Also not heard of an Airhawk so will Google that too. I was previously thinking of adding some memory foam like some matresses have but I don't want to spoil the look of the seat so I would need to cut and shape it well. What is the best way cut memory foam? |

Airhawks are a rip off price for what they are. Take a look at this link I started on another forum about an excellent mega cheap alternative I discovered.

Fortunately, my XT came with a custom seat when I bought it....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...takeFix001.jpg Didn't think much of it @ 1st.....but now....gotta say it's thee most comfortable seat I've had on all of the 14 Yamaha's I've owned.:thumbup1: The Right kind of foam....& a re-staple.....doesn't look too tough...especially for the outcome.:mchappy: |
That's a good find Mark, for under £8 it can't be bad.
Think I might go for the foam re staple option at first though. Yamahead, that's a cool looking bike and that seat looks so comfortable :) |

I did, see pictures here, BikePics - 1990 Yamaha XT 600 better thing is to find the right material for cover (the old one will be short if you radically change the shape). Search for elastic synthetic leather with a good grip, and all will be easy. To find different kind of foam is not difficult, look for a sofa-maker nearby. |
