valve clearance sump plug

Can somebody please give me the valve clearance on a 1984 XT600? Also how can I remove the sump plug as it has a phillips head screw in the middle of it and seems very very tight? Why does it?

Hi Norm,

My xt is a 1986 but I recon the valve clearences should be the same.

Intake: 0.07-0.12mm or .0028-.0047in

Exhaust: 0.12-0.17mm or .0047-.0067in

As stated in Clymer manual.

Don't know why the sump plug comes with the philips screw???? but mine is the same. It shouldn't be excessively tight (30 Nm) so be careful when removing it. The case is only aluminum as you likely already know.

Good luck!

Pawlie

Hi Norm,

The 'sumpplug' you are having difficuluty in removing isn't on the side of the engine/gearbox case by any chance? If it is you may be trying to remove the nreutral switch just a thought this had a philips screw in the centre and kinda looks like a sump plug. Please forgive me if I have insulted your mechanical ability, it was first thing that I though when you described your problem.

Regards Sam.

My sump plug has the philips screw head in the center as well but I don't use it. I just use a 19mm socket for it.
