We don't call quads " bikes" so that's where I got that but I guess it could be one. Didn't know if Mezo would remember me starting the project. The motor if fairly easy to do(with a machine shop)just researching which parts "might" fit. I suspect it'll be a torque monster. Getting it to fit in an '86 XT frame, well, that's what has taken me so long and been pushing it off. I try to do a professional job. I'm making the backbone and head area the oil tank so I have room for a bigger battery and can go with a good AGM type also. Really hoping to use a 700Raptor EFI system on it. Will work fine if the 700's flywheel fits, it has the rpm sensor pads on it for the computer. More work.

Fun stuff :thumbup1: Is the cylinder leaning a bit forward, compared to the regular XT600 engine? Will this engine fit the bikes frame without modifications?

jjrider 25 Nov 2014 19:46

Ya, the cylinder has a few degree more lean but does just barely fit the frame but I have to tip it up a bit and cut the cross brace off up at the backbone. It'll get moved up an inch and a bit of gusseting to regain strength(like I said getting it to fit the frame is the pain). I was thinking of making 3/4" tubing cradle like the Honda XR/XL's have under the motor to tie the front down tube in with the frame back by the footpegs.

The motor will end up with a bit more oil in it because the back will be a few mm lower rather than flat.

What year is the motor? i read the 01`s had second gear issues.

jjrider 26 Nov 2014 02:40

It is an '01 with an '03 trans. It had the broken gear so it was cheap. had to wait a while to find a complete trans that wasn't ridiculously overpriced.

Funny thing was I owned an '01 Raptor put on over 6k miles on it, took it sand duning with full paddles a couple times, never an issue with the transmission. They broke because idiots slamming downshifts without using the clutch.

Oh what have I done now ? :innocent:

Since I already had another cylinder bored and sleeved for another 660 piston I already have, it seemed logical . I have 2 cams and a brand new timing chain so already half way there. Just need a frame, but which one? Am looking at a Honda or the E-start version with the oil tank already in the frame, it's being a pain to make one.
