Will a 3AJ rotor fit on a later crank?
I am considering obtaining a second hand engine to replace the throughly worn out one in my 3AJ Tenere, and would like to know wether I can transfere my alternator rotor and stator (windings) to a later engine.
I would prefer to avoid the cost of buying an electronic ignition unit and would like to keep the CDI system as I like not being dependant on the battery for sparks (Thougt I had no problem with my battery during my UK to AUS trip) Anyone else done this ? Mark |
With TCI [battery ignition] there's no risk of the CDI unit giving you trouble. You can find a bettery everywhere cheap. I would stick to the TCI.

Thanks Fred
The point is that I don't have a TCI unit and was wondering if I could avoid the expense of buying one by reusing my CDI components. Also, there are more components that could go wrong in a TCI ignition system as it is dependant on battery and voltage reg , and the CDI unit just takes the place of the TCI unit. Does anyone know if the CDI unit is less reliable than the TCI unit ? Has anyone tried fitting the CDI alternator rotor on a TCI crank ? Thanks Mark |
I've heard of CDI unit breaking down but never of TCI units giving problems. The standard 47X voltage regulators are crap, make sure you have a new type finned one.

i agree with fred, tci seems to be more relaiable than cdi.
concering the alternator, easiest would be just to fit the left hand engine cover with everything inside on the new engine. regards klaus |
