worn output shaft

i recently bought tenere 1vj and on cleaning the chain for the first time i noticed the sprocket was loose. on closer inspection the splines have worn down about half there width. now it seems that whoever put the new sprocket on used the wrong one as it is thinner than the amount of shaft sticking out from the casing and only the locking ring stops it from mooving back and forth on the shaft. several things im wondering:

1. could this wear have taken place since buying the bike (about 600miles ago.)

2. this bike has the retaining ring with 2 bolts and large splines on the shaft. my other teneres have small splines and a central bolt. are these later bikes where yamaha have changed the design becouse its crap?

3. did the fact that the sprocket was too thin cause the splines to wear or is something else at work like the two sprockets being out of allignment?

sorry long one i know, but dont want it to happen again.

ooh, also, when i come to replace the shaft, will the one with the small splines fit as it seems to be a better design?

Old / new design

No, see below.

It is not really crap, but more likely to become damaged with a loose or bad chain.
My wife's 55W lives happily with it already for 120 000 kms.

3. did the fact that the sprocket was too thin cause the splines to wear or is something else at work like the two sprockets being out of allignment?
No, loose chain, flapping chain etc. will cause this. Make sure the tensioner rolls are in place and in good order, chain not too loose etc

sorry long one i know, but dont want it to happen again.

Don't know. Afraid not, you should measure both and if the dimensions are identical they should be exchangeable.

Output Shaft Spline Wear.

Hi.
This wear only gets really bad when poor quality pattern sprockets are used.
If genuine Yamaha or Renthal sprockets are used - wear is minimal.

JT, who usually make very good pattern sprockets, do not cut the splines correctly on their 575 sprocket.

There is also another pattern that people use (similar to the 575) which doesn't have the extra width shoulder on the back of the sprocket. It is very narrow & promotes fast spline thrust face wear.

The later multi-spline output shafts with non-floating sprockets are better & I supply these shafts for both the early kick only models & the 1VJ.

front sprocket...

does anyone know where i can get the sprocket with the extra width shoulder from? (with large splines).our local yamaha dealer has a genuine yam one but it is no wider than the one that is on there already. + it is rather expensive... if not a part no would be grand.

Is that a Conspiracy Theory Lee or a Fact? Im not doubting you......Just Interested for many reasons. (mostly due to the fact I hate the thought of being 'tracked') Not that I search for or download anything questionable.
My computer if tracked would show mainly searches for XT, Bikes, & RTW!

Cheers

Martyn
