Xt 600 e

Hi
My 2001 XT 600 E has run well for years. A couple of days ago , after one mile it started to misfire and not want to rev up. I limped home and cleaned the carbs and filter. Fuel supply is good.
Now, its still the same. It runs for a second, wont rev up, then cuts out.

Any ideas ?

COULD be electrical - how's the spark look? Try a fresh plug, check the plug cap.

COULD be fuel - how's the flow out of the tank - if poor, open the cap - better? Cap vent plugged. Not better - Check the fuel filter in the tank.

there's a start...

Fuel supply to carb is ok and the new spark plug is sparking.
I'm going to bypass the sidestand switch later today.

sounds electrical/ ign to me too. when things happen all of the sudden, it is 90% electrical, carbs dont go bad in a jiffy, electrons though can stop at a road block.... But for some reason so many chaps clean and re-clean the carb :)
grab the shop manual and follow the troubleshooting section.

if you ask me, the sidestand switch would simply stop the motor, not make it misfire but it's an easy fix...

Did you clean the small filter hidden under the float valve in the carb ?

It always gets missed as most don't know it's there.

And it often clogs if the bike is sat or if the fuel is contaminated.

If you want to see if its electrical, spray some carb cleaner straight into the airbox and see if it will keep running.

It sounds like a fueling/carb issue to me. At the moment anyway.

Ted - yes as well as the jets I cleaned the filter behind the float needle seat. there was just a few hairs in it. There is fresh fuel in the tank. The bike has been running great but always took three or four goesto get it to hold a tickover when cold. It ran ok for a mile then started spluttering. It has fairly new carb to head rubbers with no leaks. Its a new plug 15 miles ago. I think I'll change the plug back and short the sidestand switch
just now.

Well, I got it started with Easystart and when warmed up it would only run over 2 thou with choke.
Petrol was dripping from the underside of the carb .
This was with the sidestand wiring disconnected.
So I'm going to take the carb off again and blow it out with an airline rather that aerosols.

I just had stator issues. My XT would ride perfect for about 10 to 15 minutes then cut out, sometimes backfiring before cutout. The stator check out at first, so the fault appeared to happen after the bike warmed up. Eventually the fault got bigger and the bike wouldnt even start. Before I got to the stator I did the carb cleaning too, but to no avail.
