XT 600 model question
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all
I just acquired an XT 600, and before I try to get spare parts I'd like to confirm the correct model and year. Its a kickstart bike, UK registered in 1998 (R) but it has the separate plastic tank panels like an earlier model. The VIN is 9 digits, beginning with 3TB - I thought all vehicles should have 17 digit VINs now? Also the left side of the engine has 3AJ00 stamped on it. Does anyone recognise this model? I'd like to know if I should go for parts for a 98 model or maybe an earlier year. All replies appreciated. Roy |
Hi!
The VIN should be located on the frame right next to the tripleclamps stem! Usually the vin number is composed by the engine number (plate that is on top of the right hand side engine casing right just under the exhaust manifold(downpipes) So the VIN is something like [engine number] + [the frame number] Are you sure it's the pre-1990 model? Simple questions to know this: Does it have an e-start motor? Does it have an e-start button? check the ECU ( under the seatpost), there should be a few more numbers on it on a stamp... I believe the model you have is the 93-94 XT600E because of the passenger footpeg brackets and someone must've fitted the kickstart just posthand just like a few of us already have done it! Plus, those plastic kit, fuel tank, seatpost, rear fender and headlight are all from a the XT600E that came out from 1990 to 1995/1996! On the pre-1990 models the fuel tank side fairings were a very different from those! The only thing that doesn't make sense to me are the exhaust manifolds(downpipes).... I don't remember them having those curves at the front like that.... maybe those are from another XT model! Hope I've helped!! Vando :cool4: |
Hi Vando, thanks, you are confirming my thought that it's an early model on a later plate. It looks like the 90-95 type. The VIN on the steering head is confirmed in the registration document - 9 digits. The exact same number is on the engine. Also there is no wiring for a starter and it has the small battery so it seems to be an OE kickstart model, which was made for certain markets. All of which makes me wonder if it was a gray import.
It may be that the service parts for these two models (up to 96 and 96 on) are identical. I'm needing to replace the usual things, like chain, brake pads, filter etc. Anyone who knows the differences between them? Cheers Roy |
Ignition unit is different from electric start models. Rotor and stator also.
Brakes, chain, all other mechanical parts are the same from 90->, some parts like tank, fairings, mudguards and plastics changed after 96\97. But maintenance parts are always the same. |
Hey, take us a picture of the other side of the bike! especially the engine!
one picture that could show us the whole left side of the engine and we will tell you for sure! :cool4: chain, air filter, oil filter are the same sprockets are different!!! if i'm not mistaken lol... brake pads I don't know.. Jens, confirm us the brakepads are the same please? One important question: What are you planning on doing to the bike? small upgrades...etc etc etc... Vando beer |
1990 and up should have the same chainkit. And yep, that bike sure looks like a 1990-95 model. Sounds weird with no e-start, havent heard about it, but Im certantly no expert.
I think the brakepads are the same. I can find pads on ebay that lists from 1992-2003... The discsize changed later for a bigger disc tho, but that doesnt affect the pads. |
This looks the same as a mates bike: his is an Italian market 3TB XT600, actually built in 1992, but not used or registered until 1998, so on an R plate too. Seems like there was a batch imported. He is the second owner and it now sports alloy rims and large Acerbis tank.
Sounds just like yours - ie kick start only and v small battery, speedo only - no tacho ever fitted, and a strange oil in frame set up, with part of the rear subframe missing as the original exhaust silencer did the job! Also 17" rear wheel. Seems to go well enough though: we had 2 weeks on Moroccan pistes last March.. |

Hi all
Thanks for replies. It does seem to be a early 90s model. I've attached a pic of the other side. You cant see it clearly but the starter is not present and the casing is blanked off. And the subframe on the silencer side is "missing" the strut between the foot peg and the seat. The silencer is an aftermarket one I think, so I would be interested to see how it should be mounted to support the frame. Anyone got a picture? 17" rear wheel - yes. Presumably these imports were from a country where the VIN did not comply with the 17 digit system. I'm intending to tidy the bike up a bit and run it for a season. If I like it I may equip with proper touring luggage and use it more seriously. Cheers all. Roy |
