xt 600e model differences + other ???
 

Can anyone point me in the direction of a list that tells me the changes made to the xt 600e they appear to start in 1990 and finish in 2004 ive just bought a 93 and was wondering what parts interchange most suppliers seem to list 95on was there a major change at this point.

Does the acerbis tank fit the 93?
does anyone produce frame/luggage rails to hold soft luggage off the exhaust?

There was a big change in 95 from 3TB model to 4TP (or 4PT), but I think it was mainly bodywork. I'm pretty sure that it affects the tank mountings and where it fits to the seat, so the Acerbis tank may not fit with your seat. I know the Yamaha luggage rack (which Yamaha sell as suitable for all models) is specific to the 4PT, and won't fit the pre-95 models without some packing out of fastenings and cutting of tail plastics. But I think that the mechanics of the bike weren't affected.

If you find any luggage rails, I would be interested too. Some rails to hold soft luggage away from the hot bits would make a useful addition to the rear rack.

The 4PT introduced in '96 used a slightly different frame from the previous models as the 3TB models used to use the exhaust as part of the frame!

The later models did away with this idea and had an extra tube added to the frame where the exhaust was used previously.

This modified frame may also account for slight differences in mounting points for bodywork etc but im not sure of the exact differences.

Didn't the clutch actuation move at this time, so that the cable moved from the left side of the engine to the right? I also thought that the primary drive ratio and gear ratios changed to give 5th gear an easier time. This could also have affected final drive sprocket sizes.

Acerbis used to make two different tanks for XT600E's, one for earlier models and one for later. They looked quite different to each other. I don't know if both are still available now.

Guys, changing the plastics is possible and there is no difference in the mounting points.
I've changed all my bodywork on my 1990 XT600E to the 2002-2003 Deep Purp.Blue and it all fits in the right places! even the pillion seatgrabs fit right!

BUT, you will have to change the fuel tank, the seatpost, left and right plastics and the rear fender alltogether as they aren't compatible with the pre-96 models since they changed the bodywork!!

As for the exhaust not being part of the frame structure after 1995 model you are right. but, the exhausts for those newer models will fit on the pre 1996 models

BUT I suggest that you make a bracket of some sort to reinforce the frame from the exhaust mounting point to somewhere else in the upper frame of even the exhaust itself although I think I remember someone saying to me sometime ago they've done this without that bracket I mentioned...Was it you Wolfzero?

As you can see, There appears to be a slight difference between the seatpost and the right side fairing....
It was due to the fact that I welded a new rear shock mounting point to the frame as you can see in the next picture.

The solution for me was to cut a small piece of plastic from the under part of the seatpost that in normal circunstances fit on the frame as it should!

For me, I cut it and made two hexagonal holes to fit some nuts and used two screws to lock the seatpost!
You guys don't need to do this!

As for the ACERBIS fuel tank, I don-t see why it won-t fit as long as you change the seatpost and bodywork as well.

I also have a 3TB (1991) and was wondering if the easy-to-find 4PT tanks will fit instead of the impossible-to-find 3TB ones. Are acerbis still making the 3TB tank?

will the swingarm from the older xts that have the 18" wheel fit onto the 4pt ?

**95/96 4PT1 model looks like a 4PT but uses the old 3TB engine with L/H/S clutch cable entry**
Major differences, starting at the front.
4PT had a larger diameter brake disc. (but uses the same twin piston 3TB caliper) The 3TB disc had 6mm fasteners – The 4PT, 8mm.
4PT had a rev counter, as did all other XT550/600 models. The 3TB was the only model without one.
3TB & 4PT Top yoke/ignition switch different
3TB & 4PT tank/seat/side panels/tail piece - different, but interchangeable as a complete set.
4PT2 onwards uses an engine that has the old XTZ660 type clutch actuator mounted on the top of the clutch cover rather than using a pushrod actuated from the left, as all other XT550/600 models used.
3TB/4PT shock/linkage/swingarm/brake/rear wheel are essentially the same.

Yes, the 4PT Acerbis tank will fit an earlier 3TB – but for a perfect fit, you’ll also need a 4PT seat, side panels & tail piece.

Yes, I do! I make a lightweight steel frame/rack system that supports Ortlieb or AndyStrapz panniers.

Correct – so if you have a 3TB, its best to use a genuine Yamaha 3TB silencer.

Correct.

The primary drive ratio actually changed with the 2nd version of the 3AJ Twinlamp, long oil-cooler, Tenere in ’89. The gear ratio remained the same since the 1st 3AJ.

Only the later 4PT type is available.

No need – the 18” wheel fits the 3TB/4PT swingarms, but, yes the 3AJ arm will fit.

Does anyone know if a 34K01 barrel will fit an XT600a (similar to the 600E but kickstart model)

My engine is marked as a 3TB and it matches the frame, there are a hell of a lot of mix and match parts including 1VJ valves, the barrel is marked as a 3AJ00, the oil pump is a 1VJ as is the left casing. The conrod was originally marked 3TB but I've fitted one off a 3AJ/1VJ, only difference is the shims either side of the big end.
This was done after a heat seize through no oil. The 34k barrel/piston (assuming it fits) is the next in the process of elimination.
If it does fit, I get a usable bike over winter until I have the funds for the original crank to have a new conrod kit fitted and a rebore on the original barrel with a new piston etc.
