XT550 fork swap.
A few years ago I swapped over the front forks for a set of 43mm YZ forks. The yokes from an old KTM (with a modified stem)that I'd mounted them have now bitten the dust ( Drilled out a little two much!).
I need to replace the yokes and I recall hearing that early YZ yokes ( 1980-86) swap over with minimum fuss. As my best hope for finding a set is sight unseen from ebay I was wondering if anyone shed any light as to whether this is fact or myth. Thanks.:thumbup1: |
Ok folks this is what I've found for all those of you who might contemplate a fork swap in the future.
YZ yokes 1982-1987 use the same headstock bearings so one problem out of the way. I can't comment on the length of stems for other years only for the '87 set I got from a breakers. YZ yokes 1987 are almost a direct swap. They are only ~5mm (>1/4") longer in the stem between bearing cups. The stem is slightly lipped beyond this so I have carefully removed the lip with a file so the bearing slides down the extra 1/4". Put in a spacer above the bearing and fitted the yokes.Job done. If you fit a spacer below the bottom bearing you lose use of the turn stops, so the above is probably the best way to do it. :mchappy: |
