XT600 - idles fine, runs rough 1-2-3?
 

Good friend of mine over in Austria (does not write quite good in English) asked me to ask Pros (you guys)....he just reasonly did Oil/Filter change (thanks to good info on board) and he noticed that bike is running very nice when idles, but in 1st, 2nd and 3rd bike runs rough, little jerking....I wasn't sure what to tell him, i'm not an expert in this area. He does run some aftermarket can and he is not sure if jetting was done on the bike...It's a 98 XT600E (European model) Any opinions about this scenario? Thank you guys upfront...

Is he shortshifting? shortshifting on the XT isn't the ideal way to ride her! even more if you accelerate hard when shortshifting....the bike tends to "jump around" like a cowboy on a wild bull.......


also, he should check the chain for any tight links and take a look at the sparkplug color... anything either than a brownish-chocolatemilk color means bad carb jetting!

Can't you be a little more precise about the running rough part?

When you say jerking do you mean surging? That is to say moving along at 50 kmh (30 mph) the bike gently increases speed and then looses it in a pattern? If this is the case then the bike could be running either rich or lean.

to determine if it is rich, does the bike when quickly opening the throttle seem to gurgle first and lurch forward with authority if so it is rich. If the bike lurches forward and then seems to loose wind before picking up again, you are lean.

Thanks for the replies...he's gonna definately check if he is running rich or lean with method in previous post. He told me that his set-up right now is:Main jet (pilot jet) is 46, primary is 130 and secondary is 120 (if that changes anything) Does Dyno-jet makes a kit (stage I or else) for XT600E (this is for French market) Thanks

Those are stock jetteing, that should wotk with a stock or mildly modified engine, at sea level. So the main thing would be to adjust the CO screw correct.
