xt600 suspension questions

I am trying to improve the suspension on my 1989 u.s. model xt600. Does anyone know if the shock from an '83 tt600 (with remote gas reservoir) will fit it? And is this shock much better than the super-soft (possibly manufactured by the nerf corporation?) original shock?
Up front I am going to replace the current (and original) fork springs with progressive springs, unless anyone has a better idea. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
