Xt600e 2003 seat
Hi
Anyone have an answer to this problem? the seat top on my bike is starting to melt and become sticky in warm weather ? This is the second seat i have had that has done this. Any way to stop this weird problem? Or is renewal the only answer? Bill |
Hi Bill,
I am not sure what you mean or what the problem is, however I have a 2003 and I dont seem to have any problems. I know that is not what you want to hear but thought it might be useful to know doesnt happen to all seats (I hope) Is it the original seat? |
Hi xtcommuter!
It might be the problem is specific to the black models only? Mine has the black vinyl sides to the seat but with a grey coloured top. This seems to be a different material to the vinyl. It is the proper seat made by yamaha , but is second hand! Bill |
I have seen same problem on a DT125, the reason it happend was because it was standing underneath a tree and drops from the tree fell down to the seat. When sun is warming this up it get very sticky and is difficult to remove, try to do a real cleanup of the seat with some bad shit!

Never thought of tree sap! I wondered if i had been careless and touched the seat with brake fluid or something similar on my hands, dont remember doing so though. I hope it is tree sap. I will give it a good clean and see tomorrow. Thanks!

Hi Bill, Same bike as mine Black sides on seat grey panel on top. It's out in all weathers so don't think its the elements would be interested if you get to the bottom of the problem. Good luck.

I've never heard of this at all !!!!!!!!!!
is it a standard bike ??? |
Hi Ted !
Yes its a standard seat, As it seems to only affect my bike Im guessing its something Ive done. Not that I can recall doing anything in particular. Other than bleed the brakes earlier on in the week and I was VERY careful not to splash brake fluid around and besides that, the seat had already started to degrade before that took place. Bill |
No weird exhaust routing or anything ???
|
The times I've encountered "gummy" seats, or handgrips for that matter, has been due to sitting out day in-day out in the sunlight plus when sitting on it it kind of smears and gets dirty looking. Once they have started that, no cleaning or protective solution has stopped it. It can be lessened by a good scrubbing with a leather cleaner, then a conditioner. The seat I had was aftermarket and it alway came back in time after cleaning, but by moving around alot when ridding you do somewhat wipe it off as it builds up.No tree sap was involved, just the material breaking down some way.

Bike spends all day and night exposed to the elements. Being british weather though that doesnt include much sun! Had look again today and it does look like two areas are starting to break down and are tacky to touch. No exhaust re routing or anything like that either Ted Looks like it will remain a mystery Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Bill |
I have had the exact same problem with my 2003 XT (blue plastics&tank, blue&black seat cover). I tried all sorts of detergents & chemicals
all having almost no effect. I eventually replaced the seat cover with one from an Italian company called 'Blackbird Racing'. This cover has a more textured surface than the original Yamaha one and in my opinion is much better quality. Result.....no further problems. |
And you got Blackbird logo on the seat? mx graphics - Yamaha - XT 600 96>03 - TRADITIONAL SEAT COVER
In my opinion the logo was terrible!! |

I`m pretty much resigned to doing the same thing and getting it re covered. Not sure whether to go with the same one you mention or try Dave Lambeth`s one. I feel I should be getting one that's all black and the same type of vinyl material on the top as on the sides. Bill |
