XT600E Acerbis tank / seat gap
Hi guys, I have a newly acquired '99 XT600E that perhaps has a colourful history.
There is an ugly gap between the Acerbis tank and the seat, it looks worse than the pic below when the seat actually bolted down. The seat seems to be installed okay and is hooked into the tab on the back of the tank properly, but there's still a huge gap. Any ideas on why that is? Did someone buy a tank for a slightly different model, or install the tank slightly wrong? Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Mark http://i68.tinypic.com/vqqntz.jpg |
Its a common problem on the 34L Tenere, a mixture of old soft seat foam & a poor fitting aftermarket seat cover (to small & tight) causing the banana effect.
Kedo germany now sell aftermarket replacement foam for the Tenere`s to solve the problem, bit in your case im not aware of anyone making replacement foam. Mezo. |
I cant recall any issues on my 4Pt model.
Mine would only look like that if it wasnt hooked under the tap on the gastank. Tank looks correct from the photo. Seat looks right aswell. Do you have the stock gastank? |
Thanks guys.
Nope I don't have the stock tank unfortunately Jens, so nothing to compare it to. Mezo - so you think it's the seat itself that has warped? Damn. I guess there's no way for me to bend it back? |
I had a little bit of a gap on the one I had but not as big as that.
There are some photos on this thread but not close up http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub.../xt-600e-76823 Wayne |
Ahh yep I see it Wayne.
Guys - do you think my seat is warped / distorted then? I'm probably being stupid but it's hard to understand how such hard plastic could bend /warp so much. Is that common? If my particular seat is messed up, then I'll buy a used replacement I think. Just want to make sure it's the seat and not the tank alignment or something. Thanks. |
I dont think its something wrong with seat, you need to check the tank mounting in front. Seems like tank is to low, check what happens if you raise it in front. Is this correct tank for this bike, acerbis? Show picture of front.

You could be right there. I'll remove the tank off tomorrow and take a look at how it's mounted.
Here's a pic of the full bike from the side. http://i63.tinypic.com/15hd25w.jpg |
Remember to connect seat and tank, from picture it looks like you have missed the connection.

Thanks, but that's the problem though - it is already 100% hooked into that tab, and it still sticks out loads!
I will take a pic tomorrow when I remove the tank. Cheers. |
If the tank is seated correctly then it could be the seat, bent, deformed, but as you say, it would be hard to to with the plastic being so strong.

looks to me like someone reshaped the foam of your seat and when the cover was stapled back on it was pulled too tight around the front edge. quite easy to make that mistake...

Hello, I just wanted to report back so this thread has some sort of answer at the end in case anyone else has the same problem and finds this thread with a search.
I bought a used seat on ebay and it fits much better. There is still a small gap (lots of Acerbis tanks seem to have this looking at pics) but it's nowhere near as bad. I think the old one was modified somehow like people in the thread mentioned, and it changed shape over time. Cheers! Mark http://i64.tinypic.com/sw43.jpg |
Send your old seat to RENACZO and have them build a custom vinyl/suede job with fresh memory foam.
