XT600E mosfet rectifier/regulator voltage

Greetings all,

Recently my OEM reg/rec died out and I had to replace it. After looking up prices and info on OEM, chinese knockoffs and other options, I settled for getting a mosfet type aftermarket one from a local manufacturer.
So after mounting the mosfet the bike fires up good and I get charging voltages, but my question regards the open throttle maximum voltage output to the battery. While on idle I get 14.5 Volts without any lights on. On 3.000-5.000 rpm my polymeter shows 14.6-14.7 Volts.
Is this high a voltage considered dangerous for boiling the battery or other kind of damage?

I thank everyone for their time,
Ektor

it's perfectly fine/normal voltage if you are running a normal acid sealed or gel battery. the new generation of lithium lightweight batteries doesnt like voltage this high though. i dont use them but people who do recomend running them with a reg/rec that can be adjusted to lower voltage from what i read.

14.6v-14.7v is around the max for your average lithium battery, this is around the same (if not a little high) for just about any lead acid battery aswell. Any decent lithiumbattery will come with a BMS system that protects against overcharging, so no real worries in that regard.

My stock reg/rec was around 14,3v with no load, as I recall it.

Is the 14.6-14.7v also with lights off? What does it read with lights on?
Id prefer it to be a hair lower than 14.7v, so a little less with headlight on would be about perfect. :thumbup1:

Which reg/rec did you get?

Greetings guys and thanks for the help!

I measured with the lights off so the voltage will probably drop a tad with them operating. I' ll go check on that after I get back from work and report. The battery is the classic YTX9-BS type that Yamaha proposes for use.
I bought the rectifier from a small manufacturer here in Greece, whos' reg/recs are considered high quality by the 950/990 KTM "community".

Is this the manufacturer you bought from:

SXelectronics series R/R

I have one too on my XT600E ... since almost 2 years ... it works great.

Chris

Hey Kukku,

Not quite, but SX is well known aswell. I got mine from https://www.nakosmoto.gr/ . He resides in Corinth, pretty close to Athens. I'm quite pleased with the product. It's good quality and so far it operates smoothly.
Jens, I checked the voltage with all the various light on and got a bit lower voltage as expected. For example with low beam on in idle I get 14,2-3 and on high beam 13,9~. So all is good, I guess.

Cheers,
Ektor

Hi Ektor,

Thanks for sharing...I never came across this manufacturer.

Chris
