XT600E oil temp
 

A simple and straight question.

How much is the "normal" oil temp for an XT600E?

Do not stress engine before 60C. temp can go in summer till 120\130, but if it goes over this, better to stop for a beer and some rest for the engine too.

Depends on where in the engine you measure. The temps. mentioned above are what you get in your sump / oil tank with an air cooled engine. Water cooled engines tend o run slightly cooler looking at oil temperature but that's not a must, depends on the design of the cooling circuit.
Extreme oil temperatures of around and even in excess of 300°C are reached in the piston ring area. That's why you don't want to buy no name super performance oil from the mail order store ;D

I measure the temp in the oil tank, usually under 115oC. So i think that I'm ok...

Dude, you've either got a digit too much or a really hot engine ;)

What is the normal oil temperature for a XT600E... the outside temperature here is about 23ºC before sunset which is normal for this time of year.

I fitted the trailtech vapor air-cooled temperature sensor fitted today and I got it to 95ºC until I turned the bike off as I thought it was too high..

I can't ride the bike just yet as my battery is dead and the bike won't hold running if I remove either of the jumper cables from my boat battery..

95 is fiiiiine.

Mine climbs to 120 on the interstate in the summer.

I use 10w50 fullsynth and change oil around 3000-5000km depending on what i've been doing. The oil looks fine, sure its dark, but theres still a hint of the pink color in it, and its not smelly and foamy.

Mines about the same on mineral oil....

Well, I've just been riding here in my tarmac road (70m - 230ft) for about 15minutes and the ENGINE temperature stayed around 98ºC-99ºC (208ºF -210ºF).. medium-hard acceleration 1st and 2nd gear...

I said Engine because the Trailtech Vapor has a temperature sensor that fits on the sparkplug..
So it's 98º - 99ºC at the sparkplug which should make the oil somewhat a little below that temperature..

99°C is nothing for the head temp.I've had 265°C in the middle of an NZ summer while riding tight trails in the trees.

265º Farenheits!? right!?!? :S

Now I really need to get the oil temperature dipstick just to be sure the oil is not overheating

I've been rode for a few minutes about half hour ago and the temperature went up to 117ºC so I got scared and switched her off..


tomorrow I'm going to step up on the jets and go to 160Left 165Right and 5th needle clip..because I think I'm a bit lean (which gets the engine hotter) and I feel a lack of power right after 3rd gear and probably 4th and 5th..

We don't use Fahrenheits in this part of the world.
Don't forget you're dealing with the temp coming through the base of the sparkplug,right below that is the combustion chamber....It's going to be damn hot in that area.If you measured the temp out at the cooling fins,it wont be anywhere near as hot.

The thing is, when I touch the engine side casings, specially the left hand side it's HOT, really HOT!

I might be a bit low on oil too.. but can only get some more on monday..
guess the bike will have to stay parked in the garage :\


Just tell me something, How about if I put a mercury thermometer on the oil dipstick hole and see what the temperature is?
Is this safe?

I can imagine something going pretty wrong with that

Don,t do the dipstick thing....if your that worried about the oil leave bugger in the garage and get a mate who has an xt to come round and check the oil level for you...I have the oil thermometer instead of my dipstick and it regularly goes to 120 so don,t worry about the temp just worry about there is enough oil in it..:thumbup1:

The oil dipstick on my TTRs regularly hovers around 120 degrees, has been off the scale at over 140 too. Use decent oil, change it regularly and don't worry.

You cnat and shouldn't rejet beacuas e of a temperature that you have nothing to campare to.

I've stepped down in jets and lowereed both needles without seen anything different on engine temp (too rich before, still rich now)
