XT600E or tenere?
 

NB I posted this in the "which bike" forum, but it was suggested that I put it here instead (sorry for double posting):

Due to the general very high prices of bikes in Denmark and the limited availablity of used enduro bikes I have narrowed it down the the Yamaha XT 600 for a longer trip (either europe / africa or Ameracas have not decided yet).

However there are several options:

1) XT 600 E late 1990's with 30.000-40.000 km's (USD 6500)
2) XT 600 Z Tenere 3AJ with 45.000 km's (USD 6000)
3) XT 600 Z 'Ur' Tenere 55W with 65.000 km's but recently rebuild engine.(USD 4500)

4) I could buy a next to new XT 600 E (USD 8500-9000)

My brain tells me option 1 or 4 would give me less trouble but will also be the most expensive options. However my heart tells me the Tenere as I in some unrational way find it a more 'cool' and adventurous bike. It also has the larger tank, but I could just fit the acerbis 23 l on the 600 E.

Any suggestions and comments on the options will be greatly appreciated!

I would take a new 600e first and second the 55w depending on how extensive the rebuild was. The other bikes with 40K on them, if stock, will soon need some engine work.

I can definitely recommend the XT600E as a tough machine, my 20K 2002 one is used offroad for most of it's miles and has completed Enduros, long distance trials and trailriding with only the standard consumable stuff being required in my 4 years of ownership. From reading other posts, the 4PT has the most reliable engine with the infamous 5th gear issue being sorted (as long as you don't chug along in top at 3000 revs).
An Acerbis tank, CRD bashplate, and 18" rear wheel, junking the indicators and running sintered metal EBC brake pads transformed mine into something that has hit the deck plenty of times offroad, but still starts first time and when required has gobbled up 300Km trips up the motorway to get to some rather distant off road trails.
A new or nearly new machine which has been so developed that it doesn't really have any major faults has got to be a better bet than something old with lots of wear and tear.

Ive been looking at the www´s for Yam eu, uk and Spain and none list the XT, or at leats I cant find it!
