xtz 660 1992 balance shaft problem
i have been doing a bit of research into a knocking sound coming from my engine at first i thought it was the crank giving it all up to retire but it just didnt sound like the crank after a bit of googling
it seems that the balance shaft washers are the culprits they wear and loosen the shaft makes lots of noise then it comes away and smashes through the engine it looks like a cheap enough fix but i cant seem to track down any one who has the relevant replacement part numbers has any one on here had the same problem ? if so can you point me in the direction of the parts required its a great bike but for now its sitting in the garage as i dont want to do any more damage than is already done its a 1992 xtz 660 3yf tenere |
Check your Cam chain tensioner...
My XT had that noise... and while riding the camchain broke and bent both my intake valves... Good luck! Vando :cool4: |

As far as I know it has occurred with XT600's that the balancer shaft nut loosened up with devastating results. For the older 660's this has happened with the crankshaft nut (right side). The fix is to remove clutch cover and clutch, loosen the relevant nuts and torque them again to the required torque and a bit more, with NEW TABWASHERS.
To remove the clutch you could just block the rear wheel with a rope, put the bike in gear. For the balancer shaft and crankshaft nut you could insert a copper or aluminum washer between the gears. tabwasher crankshaft nut: 90215-20197 tabwasher balancer shaft nut: 90215-16242 tw clutch nut: don't have that. The flywheel nut has no tabwasher, and is not known for undoing itself. But would not hurt to check while you are at it anyway. No need to remove LH cover. Auke |
