Yamaha Xt600 MPG?
 

Hi,
I just acquired a 1994 Yamaha XT600E 3TB. I was wondering what sort of miles per gallon I can expect to get from her on long journeys. I have also heard that this model has a slightly dodgy gearbox, can anyone suggest some preventive maintenance to deal with this?

Around 40-45 mpg normal riding

Around 50 - 60 mpg if you treat the throttle carefully on a long journey and use high gears

Around 35 mpg if you bomb it

With regard to the gearbox - change the oil (and oil filter) regularly (every 1,400 miles or so) and use good quality stuff.

I generally get 60-70 mpg on a steady run, even loaded up, running around 100kph. She's an '02 model, all standard.:thumbup1:

Commuting (13 miles each way, A-road, throttle nailed most of the time, speeds 60-80) - 50-55 mpg.

Gentler use (max 60, smelling the flowers) - 60+ mpg.

I can only imagine kentfallen's 35 mpg is either in heavy traffic or seriously off-road, as the only way I could get that in normal riding would be with a leaky fuel tank.

hi my 1985 43f, 55 to 60 mpg around town more on a long run ,i borrowed a mates 1990 jap inport srx 600 electric start mono shock this did an amazing 75mpg on a long run so mpg on these engines is good, take care zigzag

Jetting plays an important part in the consumption too. I know a mechanic who gets 80 mpg from his XT.

I would like to see the state of his spark plug, that sounds like it is running lean somewhere....leave it like that and a hole in the piston appears as it runs too hot..... 50mpg seems to be run of the mill..... I get 200 miles to the tank (£20ish of fuel) on a 3AJ and account for bombing everywhere, worn chain & sprockets, camchain chattering ( am due a rebuild next week) ..... so I will fix the reserve problem at the same time...If you are getting lower than 50 while treating it gently, look at new spark plug/gap/HT lead and clean airfilter, then check the other bits like carb/float etc.

If you're travelling in Africa, you will get 80mpg.

REASON: with that small tank, you won't be able to go faster than 60km/h... else you won't make it to the next fuel stop.

And even then, you'll run out petrol, before you reach the next town with a fuel pump... so the last mile, will be completed by ppp. (personal pushing power)

I can confirm this, from personal experience. On several occassions.


Put differently: 80mpg if you're going steady at 60km/h

My 600E, fully loaded up, got about 10 miles per litre while riding highways at 65mph. (Giving me 230 miles out of a 23L Acerbis tank) = 45mpg

Although.. In Brazil when using their fuel (30% ethenol), I was getting about 380 miles (68mpg)from the tank with no huge noticable change in power until the ethenol gummed up my carb and discoloured all my fuel lines :thumbdown:

I was also getting 10miles per litre but I usually ride fast around 100km/h and over... STILL I drove carefully, I'm not a maniac lol

On mine, my mates and the wifes TTR/TTRE's, basically the same engine, I have always found 20-25 kpl to be normal even two up with luggage, in the desert, in the Andes. The best ever was fully loaded with ally boxes etc in Morocco over 26 kpl at approx 50mph/80kmph using leaded "super".

Or, like me, you can forget to push the choke back, and ride all day with it on. About halves your fuel efficiency!:oops2:

those carbs i fitted to my bike dont have a locking choke so i cant leave the choke on :thumbup1:
the only down side is that i have to hold the choke on manually for about half a minute :rolleyes2:
