Il fut un temps où il était nécessaire d’appartenir à un club, d’écumer les concentrations, de squatter les concessions ou de consulter les annonces dans la presse spécialisée pour avoir l’opportunité de s’informer, de rencontrer et d’échanger avec des voyageurs au long court.

Avec l’avènement d’Internet, cela n’est plus indispensable, les connexions se font du fond du canapé, sous pseudo face à un écran sur lequel défile le monde qui bouge, explore et voyage dans le monde réel… ou pas.

A distance, en pleine recherche d’infos, difficile de trier le vrai du faux, les aventures vécues des fariboles, les actes avérés des rêves éveillés, les bons conseils des fausses pistes.

Dans ce labyrinthe à la recherche d’échanges et de connaissances, avec sa communauté de 700 000 voyageurs internationaux, un site Canadien (www.horizonsunilimited.com) né il y a plus de 20 ans, est devenu une référence pour tous les amoureux d’aventure à moto, mais pas que. 4x4, vélos et baroudeurs de l’extrême sont tout autant concernés, ce qui renforce encore l’intérêt de ce site libre d’accès, par la variété et la qualité des témoignages et des conseils échangés.

C’est une vraie mine d’or pour ceux qui souhaitent s’informer avant de partir, n’importe où dans le monde et par n’importe quel moyen, à condition de comprendre l’anglais ou d’être suffisamment au fait des outils inclus dans les moteurs de recherche (comme Google Chrome) capables de traduire les pages visionnées, quasi instantanément et avec peu d’erreurs. Le plus remarquable est que les créateurs du site ne se contentent pas de rassembler les gens sur leur espace virtuel, ils incitent leurs membres à organiser des rencontres dans la vraie vie lors des Horizons Unlimited travellers Meeting. Une quinzaine d’évènements se déroulent ainsi chaque année à travers le monde : USA, Allemagne, Irlande, Mongolie, Afrique du sud et France…

By the time you read these lines, the tenth HU France gathering will have passed, but this interview with Laurence, one of the organizers, will certainly make you want to book your weekend for their 2023 event.

VAM : Laurence, quel est votre expérience perso du voyage à moto ?

Laurence : J’ai 56 ans et je suis venu à la moto tardivement, suite à une demande en mariage dont la condition était que je passe mon permis A, pour voyager en couple, mais chacun sur sa monture. Et c’est ce que l’on fait depuis près de 15 ans sur Suzuki VSTROM 650, BMW1200 GS ou 650 GS en Europe, Asie centrale, USA… l’appétit a grandi après chaque voyage avec l’envie de repartir ailleurs et toujours plus loin. L’une des motos de mon mari totalise ainsi 220 000 km.

VAM : Quelles sont les origines de Horizons Unlimited ?

Ce site a été fondé par des grands baroudeurs canadiens Grant et Susan Johnson. Il regroupe des forums, des récits de voyage, et depuis de nombreuses années l’idée de réunir ces communautés dans la réalité à fait naitre des évènements à travers toute la planète.

Ayant participé à plusieurs reprises à ces rassemblements, en tant que visiteur et en tant que conférencière, on m’a proposé de rejoindre l’équipe organisatrice. C’est avec joie que j’ai rejoint l’équipe des « limons » (en référence à la couleur de nos tee-shirt « organisateur » vert lime). Ces rassemblements d’un week-end regroupent des conférences avec des voyageurs racontant leur périple à travers un film ou un diaporama, des ateliers pratiques variés et un village d’exposants thématiques (livres, équipements, accessoires, matériel de bivouac…). Ce programme renouvelé à chaque édition attire beaucoup de futurs voyageurs ou des routards expérimentés venus glaner des informations ou simplement partager un bon moment convivial avec tous.

VAM: Laurence, what is your personal experience of motorcycle travel?

Laurence: I am 56 years old and I came to motorcycling late, following a marriage proposal, the condition of which was that I pass my A license, to travel as a couple, but each on their mount. And that's what we've been doing for almost 15 years on Suzuki VSTROM 650, BMW1200 GS or 650 GS in Europe, Central Asia, USA... the appetite has grown after each trip with the desire to go elsewhere and always further away. One of my husband's motorcycles has covered 220,000 km.

 VAM: What are the origins of Horizons Unlimited?

Laurence: This site was founded by great Canadian adventurers Grant and Susan Johnson. It brings together forums, travel stories, and for many years the idea of ​​bringing these communities together in reality has given rise to events all over the planet. Having participated several times in these gatherings, as a visitor and as a speaker, I was offered to join the organizing team. It was with joy that I joined the "limons" team (in reference to the color of our lime green "organizer" T-shirts). These weekend gatherings include conferences with travelers recounting their journey through a film or slide show, various practical workshops and a village of thematic exhibitors (books, equipment, accessories, bivouac material, etc.). This program, renewed with each edition, attracts many future travelers or experienced backpackers who come to glean information or simply share a good, friendly time with everyone.

VAM : Parlez-nous du meeting Horizons Unlimited France

Laurence : L’événement en France existe depuis maintenant 9 ans.

Il a grossi au fil des années de 30 personnes autour d’un feu de camp jusqu’à 160 participants depuis maintenant 3 ans. Petite anecdote, l’événement Français pour célébrer les 20 ans du Site a été le seul à avoir été maintenu dans le monde, malgré la pandémie en 2020. Notre meeting continuera à grossir, mais raisonnablement pour rester amical et ne pas devenir commercial. Chaque année nous invitons un Voyageur remarquable. Ainsi nous avons reçu Anne France d’Hauteville, Mélusine Mallender, Eric Lobo, Alain Arnaud, Philippe Lautridou… tous venus nous conter leurs aventures et partager leur vécu en toute simplicité avec nos visiteurs du week-end.

VAM : Qui sont les organisateurs et quel est leur rôle exact ?

Laurence : Ils sont tous des bénévoles volontaires. Un turn-over s’opère naturellement et ces dernières années c’est Joelle, Jean Michel, Laurent, David et moi-même qui assumons la pérennité de ce point de rencontre devenu incontournable. Nous sommes tous des voyageurs motards, la moto représentant pour nous l’outil idéal pour découvrir les pays au plus près des habitants, en recherche d’authenticité loin des chemins touristiques.

Notre rôle est de contacter les futurs conférenciers, de publier des infos concernant les modalités d’inscriptions, la liste des partenaires et des intervenants sur notre page FB (www.facebook.com/horizonsunlimitedfrance) et le site Horizons Unlimited (www.horizonsunilimited.com) le tout en relation avec les fondateurs au Canada car nous avons des directives à respecter (traduction des conférences, respect de l’éthique éco-responsable…). On organise la logistique avec le camping des Hirondelles qui accueille l’événement depuis plus de 6 éditions, on installe le matériel vidéo pour les conférences, prépare les discours et les jeux d’animation des diners… Les inscriptions s’effectuent directement sur le site Hu et le paiement des prestations hôtelières (gite et couvert) directement au camping.

De nombreux volontaires nous apportent de l’aide pour l’installation du matériel quelques jours avant l’arrivée des visiteurs et restent aussi après pour aider au démontage et au rangement des barnums et autre matériel nécessaire au bon déroulement de l’évènement.

VAM: Tell us about the Horizons Unlimited France meeting

Laurence: The event in France has existed for 9 years now. It has grown over the years from 30 people around a campfire to 160 participants for 3 years now. Our meeting will continue to grow, but reasonably to remain friendly and not become commercial. Each year we invite a remarkable Traveler. VAM: Who are the organizers and what is their exact role?

Laurence: They are all voluntary volunteers. A turnover occurs naturally and in recent years it is Joelle, Jean Michel, Laurent, David and myself who assume the sustainability of this meeting point which has become essential. We are all biker travellers, the motorcycle representing for us the ideal tool to discover the countries closer to the inhabitants, in search of authenticity far from the tourist paths. Our role is to contact future speakers, to publish information on registration procedures, the list of partners and speakers on our FB page (www.facebook.com/horizonsunlimitedfrance) and the Horizons Unlimited website (www.horizonsunilimited. com) all in relation with the founders in Canada because we have directives to respect (translation of conferences, respect for eco-responsible ethics, etc.). We organize the logistics with the Hirondelles campsite, which has hosted the event for more than 6 editions, we install the video equipment for the conferences, prepare the speeches and the dinner entertainment games... Registration is done directly on the site Hu and the payment of hotel services (bed and breakfast) directly at the campsite. Many volunteers help us with the installation of the equipment a few days before the arrival of the visitors and also stay after to help with the dismantling and storage of the barnums and other equipment necessary for the smooth running of the event.

VAM : S’il existe, quel est le profil type du participant (âge, expérience préalable, couche sociale...) ?

Laurence : Il n’y a aucun profil réellement défini. C’est un point de rencontre de personnes qui ont envie de voyager en autonomie, de construire leur propre expérience, de tracer leur voie après avoir glané ici, toutes les infos qu’ils jugeaient indispensables pour y parvenir. Comme cette jeune aventurière qui nous a rejoint il y a 2 ans pour découvrir l’évènement avec sa 125 cm3, qui l’année suivante valide son permis A pour aujourd’hui faire route seule en direction du Pakistan. Ou comme ce vieux loup de « terre » qui a parcouru plus de 500.000 km à sillonner le globe. Quel que soit leur âge, leurs moyens financiers ou leur expérience ceux qui nous rejoignent ont tous ressenti l’appel de la clé de contact, l’ébullition des préparatifs (administratifs et matériels), les frissons des premiers tours de roue et enfin l’extase du voyage. Le week-end HU France permet de prolonger toutes ses émotions de partager l’aventure ou d’en préparer de nouvelles en assistant à nos conférences et en participant à nos ateliers.

VAM : Justement qui sont les intervenants des conférences et les sujets abordés dans les ateliers ?

Laurence : Cette année, Jean nous parlera de sa route menant au Kurdistan, Sébastien de la cordillère des Andes et Pierre Emanuel nous emmènera en Islande.

Avant chaque édition, des personnes nous proposent le récit de leur voyage, on contacte aussi des voyageurs que l’on découvre sur la toile ou lors d’autres meetings afin de sélectionner une large variété d’intervenants, de destinations, de parcours et d’expériences, des plus accessibles au plus démesurées.  

Concernant les ateliers, il y a chaque année du renouveau et des sujets classiques comme pilotage de drone, mécanique, pilotage off road, relever sa moto, photo, cartographie… La présence de nombreux partenaires liés au voyage nous permet également d’étendre les opportunités d’échanges et d’organiser des jeux avec des lots à la clé.

 Laurence: There is no really defined profile. It is a meeting point for people who want to travel independently, to build their own experience, to chart their course after having gleaned here, all the information they deemed essential to achieve it. Like this young adventurer who joined us 2 years ago to discover the event with her 125 cm3, which the following year validated her A license to today drive alone towards Pakistan. Or like this old “earth” wolf who has traveled more than 500,000 km to criss-cross the globe. Whatever their age, their financial means or their experience, those who join us have all felt the call of the ignition key, the boiling of the preparations (administrative and material), the shivers of the first turns of the wheel and finally the travel ecstasy. The HU France weekend allows you to prolong all your emotions of sharing the adventure or preparing new ones by attending our conferences and participating in our workshops.

VAM: Exactly who are the speakers at the conferences and the topics covered in the workshops?

Laurence: This year, Jean will tell us about his route to Kurdistan, Sébastien about the Andes and Pierre Emanuel will take us to Iceland. Before each edition, people offer us the story of their trip, we also contact travelers whom we discover on the web or during other meetings in order to select a wide variety of speakers, destinations, routes and experiences. experiences, from the most accessible to the most excessive. Concerning the workshops, every year there is a renewal and classic subjects such as drone piloting, mechanics, off-road piloting, raising your motorcycle, photography, cartography... The presence of many travel-related partners also allows us to extend the opportunities exchanges and to organize games with prizes at stake.

VAM : Quand aura lieu le prochain meeting en France ?

Laurence : 2023 sera le 10eme anniversaire du Horizons Unlimited travellers Meeting en France. Le rendez-vous est déjà pris pour le troisième week-end de Septembre toujours au camping des hirondelles à Loupiac (lot). Pour info, cette année, le prix de l’inscription à l’événement, donnant accès à tous les ateliers, était compris entre 35 et 50 Euros hors hébergement (camping et repas).

VAM : HU France pourrait-il organiser des stages ou des voyages dans le futur ? Laurence : Le But du HU France n’est pas d’organiser des voyages mais de mettre à disposition des visiteurs tous les outils nécessaires à la préparation de leur périple, qu’ils soient expérimentés ou pas, dans un esprit de partage convivial et sans arrière-pensée commerciale de notre part.

VAM : Avez-vous de nouveaux projets de voyages perso ?

Laurence : Malgré la conjoncture géopolitique difficile vers certaines destinations, nous sommes prêts à partir. Notre dernière acquisition est un Side Ural deux roues motrices, l’outil idéal pour rouler sur des surfaces non revêtues et difficiles d’accès à moto : boue, neige, glace… Pour l’été 2023 on pense ainsi s’attaquer à l’Alaska pour une expérience inédite.

Histoire de la naissance d’Horizons Unlimited

C'est en attendant le bateau pour rallier l'Antarctique, en 1997, que leur est venu l'idée de partager leurs récits de voyages. En 2000, dès que c’est techniquement possible, ils lancent leur propre site et se mettent à publier quelques-unes de leurs aventures. Rapidement, les amoureux de voyage se passionnent pour ces histoires relatées avec simplicité et soin du détail, au point que leur messagerie croule sous les demandes d'infos pratiques. Pour y répondre, Horizons Unlimited se mue une plateforme dédiée au voyage à moto qui vous explique comment voyager et où, avec des sections consacrées à l'administratif, aux finances, à la préparation de la moto et à celle des pilotes... Si à l’origine, Grant et Susan ont passé des centaines d'heures à mettre en ligne leurs informations, la base du site repose désormais sur l'échange entre internautes et chaque section est doublée de forums dédiés. Le succès du site est tel que ce lieu d'échange et d'amitié extraordinaire est devenu leur moyen de subsistance aujourd'hui, bien qu’il reste libre d’accès, sans pour autant être envahi par la pub. La belle histoire continue !

VAM: When will the next meeting take place in France?

Laurence: 2023 will be the 10th anniversary of the Horizons Unlimited travelers Meeting in France. VAM: Do you have any new personal travel plans?

Laurence: Despite the difficult geopolitical situation in certain destinations, we are ready to leave. Our latest acquisition is a two-wheel drive Side Ural, the ideal tool for riding on unpaved surfaces that are difficult to access on a motorcycle: mud, snow, ice... For the summer of 2023, we are thinking of tackling Alaska for a unique experience.
